"Bodacious ta tas" is best of
Roxx Gang. This compilation is spanning through the whole career of
Roxx Gang - from their major label debut "Things You've Never Done Before" to their latest studio cd "Drinkin'
TNT & Smokin' Dynamite".
Hot for Love kicks off this compilation just great. This is an up-tempo kick ass song that puts the listener in the special
Roxx Gang mood.
The irresistible
Daddy's Farm is introducing a saxophone on the intro. There is a great piano, which is playing throughout the whole song. The solo contains a saxophone and guitar duel, which just makes this song irresistible.
A pretty doomy guitar dominates
Time Bomb, which is a bit darker than the previous up-tempo Rock 'n' Roll songs.
If you take a closer look at the guitar amplifier it must have the setting "Gain" at maximum overdrive. The distorted slide guitar riff makes
Mojo Guru very "dirty". The song is a Blues song and again a well-played piano is adding an extra dimension to the song.
No Easy Way Out is introducing
Roxx Gang major label debut. This is my favorite
Roxx Gang track, because of the amazing Rhythm playing and tasty lead work on top of it. This is melodic Hard Rock at its best. This song also features a great keyboard and a great harmonizing guitar solo. Kevin Steele's voice is just the cherry on top.
Tiger Lily reminds me of a flower power track with congas and some great female backing vocals. The song has a great groovy rhythm.
Strawberry Wine is very much in the same "peace - flower power" vein.
The well penned kick ass rocker
Dogtown is back to
Roxx Gang's love for Rock 'n' Roll. This is sleazy Rock 'n' Roll, which is rare nowadays.
Roxx Gang is true to their musical style.
You Really Got A Hold on me is a great rocker from their latest studio album. The music is not so naive anymore, but it still rocks big time in the Glam/Sleaze style. This song proves that
Roxx Gang is not some washed up 80's band. This song is among the strongest on this compilation.
My introduction to
Roxx Gang was in 1990, when a friend of mine bought their debut album because of
Red Rose. He played it for me and I dug it immediately. It was just a shame that the marked was flooded with Glam bands at the time. Today this song is still as great and beautiful, as it was 12 years ago. The lyrics are really sad dealing with death.
Red Rose is the most accessible
Roxx Gang track.
Roxx Gang are quite diversified.
Who's Been Driving My Cadillac? is pure Rock 'n' Roll with a horn section and honky tonk piano. Again a song from the latest album proving that Kevin Steele still has a great set of pipes.
The music for
Too Cool For School is excellent with some great guitar work. However, a minus is the primitive lyrics. The lyrics reflect a young
Roxx Gang and the explanation is, that this song was from the demo that got the band their major record label deal. Perris Records have released the first
Roxx Gang demos on the "Love 'Em and Leave 'Em" album.
From
Roxx Gang's first album
Scratch My Back is an entertaining Rock song. I like the metaphor used, because the lyrics are obviously about another topic. Just check the great artwork if you haven't guessed the topic. Compared to newer
Roxx Gang stuff the lead guitars are more visible on their earlier stuff.
Scratch My Back is a great party tune rounding off the presentation of
Roxx Gang's career so far.
Roxx Gang have always been true to their style and that is rewarded from me. As stated in the track by track review the music of
Roxx Gang is diversified. However, I do miss the party song
Stone Dead Drunk (Again) instead of their more experimental song like
Strawberry Wine. The lineup of
Roxx Gang has changed over the years with vocalist and front man Kevin Steele being synonymous with
Roxx Gang. His unique voice characterizes all six albums from
Roxx Gang.
Overall this album is highly recommendable unless you have all the previous
Roxx Gang releases. Everyone who is not familiar with
Roxx Gang should give them a listen. The have stuck to their guns and have not sold out. They still play their high-octane mixture of sleazy Rock 'n' Roll spiced with a twist of Glam.
