Events and Reports - Sun Caged - Live at Godset, Kolding - Nov. 15, 2002
Written by Tajs

The Dutch progressive metal band Sun Caged played last of the three bands that were to play this friday evening in Kolding. The first band Process was a local young death metal band. Some of it sounded interresting but lacking in experience. Next band was German Bonehouse. These old guys played punk and I really don't know why the venue booked this band with the 2 metalbands. I don't get this type of music so no comments from me on this one.

After Bonehouse, it was pure pleasure for the ears when Sun Caged went on stage. Let me tell you right away that they are all virtuoses on their respective instruments. Even though the band itself is relatively new, they are the kind of guys who have been playing music most of their lives. First song was the instrumental Killer Banshee. The best words I can think of to describe the sound of this one is psychotic metal fusion. If you don't know Sun Caged but are intrigued by these words, you can get the songs from the official Sun Caged website here.

The sound was good and every detail of the song could be heard, which is good since there generally are a lot of details in their music. Killer Banshee right away showed the audience that this band was different from the first 2 bands. This was music on another level. Definitely metal but with a sound that is more crazy than most other bands. I'm talking Sieges Even crazy here, not just average time changes. We have melodies that haunt and lightning speed solos. But all very melodic in a jazzy way. Hmmm, jazz metal? Spastic Inc comes to mind. Maybe an influence there?

There aren't really that many other bands in this league. Dream Theater comes to mind of course since technically they are on the same level and they both have some jazz influences from time to time. But SC have a more "wacky" sound. And they act more crazy on stage! Way more, actually. They play with an attitude that says: "We are here to play some crazy music". And so they did. Another great instrumental was Four Guilders. A song that really showed us the power of the singer, André Vuurbom was Secrets of Flight.

Talking about the singer, I was a a bit surprised when I first saw him. This guy looks more like a bodybuilder than a metal singer. But as soon as he opened his mouth and started singing I relaxed again: This guy is good!

Keyboarder Joost can den Broek looked like when I saw him play with Star One. Crazy and with an incredible ease of playing. I can't help getting a little bit jealous when I see this kind of young musicians who play way better than you ever will :)

The rest of the band, the 2 sevenstringers Marcel Coenen (guitar) and Rob van der Loo (bass) and the drummer Dennis Leeflang were quite amazing too. My first reaction when I heard that Rob used a 7-string bass was "Why would a bass player need that?". During the show I found out that there are plenty of things to use it for, especially some crazy tapping parts.

As encore they came back in and played Iron Maiden's Caught Somewhere in Time. Now, Iron Maiden is not exactly the easiest thing for a singer to sing but André did the song really, really well. We even got a "Scream for me, Kolding!" in the middle! It wasn't until after the concert, my friend Steen told me that Sun Caged usually play a Maiden cover at all their concerts. The next song was even more surprising: Dream Theater's Caught in a Web. Another proof that this band is lacking nothing in musicianship.

It was a shame that so few people showed up this friday evening in Kolding because the audience was treated with some excellent music from a band that might just get really big one day. As the evening went by, the band opened up more and more and really started to enjoy themselves. They obviously like to play live and you can see that this is not one of those reserved bands who just look at their instruments and aren't really in contact with the audience. Even though they they were acting crazy on stage, I didn't notice any mistakes.

Currently, Sun Caged is preparing to record their debut album during february which is to be released later this year. I, for one, await this album with high hopes since I think they have a lot of potential. Dream Theater fans who, like me, are getting a bit bored with DT should definitely check out this band.

All in all it was a great evening. I fear that next time I see them live, I will have to fight to get to the front before the stage. This band could go really far!
