Staff page - Tajs
Tajs is no longer part of the RevelationZ staff. As long as his articles are available on the site, this page will be here.
My name is Tajs Kolman and I'm here to tell you about good music.
To be more precise: Metal. And to be even more precise: Progressive- power- and technical metal and hopefully some guitar music too. This is what I listen to most of the time, even though I may put on a classical cd from time to time. I play the guitar, both electrical and classical, which has probably influenced my taste in music a lot. That means that when I listen to music I need some interresting guitar parts, so you will probably always hear me comment on the guitar in the cds I review.
Going back in time, I rember the first metal record I got: Scorpions - World Wide Live. I remember that I was fascinated by the power and energy these guys had. I don't listen to them much these days but that was definitely the beginning for me. Next step was Metallica's Black album, which then made me get their earlier albums that turned out to be even better.
This was more or less the time I started to play guitar and that made me start listening to the superguitarists such as Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and Yngwie Malmsteen. Especially Yngwie's classical style appealed to me since I grew up in a home sorrounded by classical music. This was the beauty and virtuosity of classical combined with the power of metal.
Next big step in my musical voyage was Dream Theater. Like so many other people, I was blown away by "Images and Words". DT continued to be my favorite band for several years until I discovered Symphony X. At this thime it wasn't enough to have a fantastic guitarist play insane stuff over some boring parts, now I needed a whole band that would make the whole picture of the song amazing. All the members og DT and Sy X are amazing musicians both technically and musically which means that there is always a new part for you to discover. This is what makes my heart sing these days: a song that has everything from a beautiful voice, a bass line that would be interesting to listen to in itself, to kickass drums that don't just play some boring 2-4 beat. And of course a guitar with beautiful melodies.
Lately I have been trying to widen my musical horizon by listening to other genres of metal. Especially a lot of power metal bands have gained some room in my cd collection. I have also tried to listen to some death metal bands. I must admit that the voice is still making the small hairs on the back of my neck act funny but a lot of bands have some great music under all the growling.
OK, gotta run. Got work to do. Cds to review. Concerts to go to. People to interview. It's going to be tough but remember, dear reader, that we do all these things for YOU! (Ok ok, and also because we like it..)
