Superior Massacre, the sophomore album from
Myrkskog, has been three years underway, and there has been some line up changes in the band. Two members have left the band, including vocalist Master V. Therefore front man Destructhor, who only played the guitar before, now also does the vocals.
The album is very technical, and this is really important in all death metal.
Yes Norwegian
Myrkskog plays death metal, and this is great in a time where
Norway doesn't have a lot of bands in that genre. A lot of the good non-melodic death metal bands seem to come from the States these days (yes, I know there are exceptions).
For a first time vocalist, Destructhor does a great job - his vocals (guttural noises) are really dark and brutal, and they fit fine with the music. His guitar skills, however, are quite amazing - he delivers some very cool and very fast riffs. The bass and drums follow just fine, and the band is very tight.
The album has a pretty obscure
Intro which sounds like a mix between wind blowing (with distortion) and demons talking - I guess it won't work without demons. The next track is called
Domain Of The Superior, and it is very fast and quite catchy. The drummer Secthdamon really shows how excellent his drumming skills are in this track.
It is difficult to sit still when you hear
Trapped In Torment - just when you thought it wasn't possible to play any faster
Myrkskog does so. This track is very complex, and full of excellent riffs and breaks.
Over The Gore is another track straight out of the great big death metal cook book (you know?). It is very catchy, even though you never really feel - that you can follow the rhythm.
Utter Human Murder is extremely cool! It starts out relatively slow, and then
Myrkskog builds up to a pace most other death metal bands can only envy.
Overall this is an excellent album that I would highly recommend to fans of non-melodic death metal. The reason why
Superior Massacre doesn't get an even higher grade, is that it is not quite as catchy as some other death metal.
