Thine - In therapy
Listening to this album has been a nice surprise. I'd never heard of Thine before and judging by the cover I didn't really know what to expect...

What is offered here is excellent melodic moody rock music with an atmosphere that reminds me of movies like Cruel Intentions and Dead Poets Society. Thine are able to create music with a very melancholic atmosphere and do it in their very own style. If I had to compare them to something, then I would describe them as a moodier and more atmospheric Oasis or a "maybe not quite as heavy" HIM. If you like those two bands or melancholic rock music in general then this one should hit the spot.

This album is full of beautiful melodies and very catchy choruses. I've seen the music being described as being somewhat similar to Anathema. Well, I can't tell you if that's true as I've never anything by Anathema before. But if it's right then I'll have to check that band out soon.

The production on the album is close to perfect and helps define the overall feeling. I especially like the voice of Alan Gaunt. Brilliant! He has a great ear for vocal melodies and sings excellent throughout the record. His voice has what it takes to lift the band above others. I was hooked almost from the first time I listened to this.

Best kept secret opens the disc and lays the groundwork for the great atmosphere that runs through the album.

Most of the songs are very catchy and there is not one bad song among them. A couple of the songs that got me hooked were Contact point with its killer chorus and the brilliant Never learn with its truly melancholic atmosphere and amazing singing. Last better day, In therapy and Running are strong songs too.

Feel is another favourite with its catchy chorus and great guitar riff in the background. Check out the nice guitar effect in the verses when you listen really close.

This is not happy party music, but it was never intended to be that way. This is excellent thoughtful rock music with the ability to create a special mood that I don't experience very often. Unfortunately the lyrics were not included with the promo I got. I'm pretty sure they will enhance my experience even further.

This album will need some time to grow, but give it that and I could imagine some people would love this one a lot.

Check this band out. I have a feeling that with a little time and a few more albums to develop their style this band might be huge someday. They should be.

Update 2. November 2002:
I've been listening to this album consistently ever since I wrote the review over a month ago and it just keeps getting better and better. I'm totally hooked on the feel of this album. The genius of the somewhat laid back guitar playing only really shows after many listens. There are many little touches and melodies that come to life. The lyrics underline the melancholic atmosphere perfect. Do yourself a favor and give it a listen.

Hey Elton,
You should buy the full album at Amazon by following this link. Unfortunately the full album does not contain the lyrics. I managed to grab the lyrics when they were at the official site and I'm sending them to you now.

just discovered this band... really an amazing album. got addicted to it within a very short time. somehow reminded me of a mix of anathema, katatonia and even arcturus/winds but with a more pop-like approach. the only album that manages to get in my player on constant repeat besides this one is khoma "the second wave".

well, to get in the queue as well... if anybody happens to have the lyrics to "in therapy". i would really appreciate if somebody could send them to excoriate@gmail.com. many thanks in advance!

Steen's review basically describes "In Therapy" very well.

One thing is bugging me every time I play this great album. I was offered to review this album but refused. Huge mistake - because this album is really great.

"In Therapy" is packed with atmosphere mainly caused by the great moody guitars, always playing a great melody line. The vocals are sometimes doubled, which is contributory to creating the melancholic atmosphere, which is mentioned in the review. This is masterly performed on my favorite song Contact Point, which along with the title track are among my favorite tracks this year.

A highly recommendable album.
