Heaven's Basement is one of the most promising up-coming bands. Hailing from the UK the band has toured the kingdom non-stop the past years and released two Ep. Since Heaven's Basement have a new EP out it was time to learn more about the high hope on the UK rock scene. We will let the main person introduce himself.
I'm Chris Rivers, I'm from Manchester England and I play drums in Heaven's Basement.
Tell us about the history of the Heaven's Basement. More specifically, when was the band formed, any particular highlights and the change of members since your last EP?
The band formed in 2008, the band was born on the back of a pervious band we'd played in together which we all decided to end due to a few reasons. Myself and Sid are the remaining founding members of the band and we been joined by Rob on Bass and Aaron on Vocals since then. The hardest part of any band is finding people who are all on the same page with their vision, commitment and where they want to go. The whole lifespan of the band has been unique to other bands I think, the band was born with an awesome amount of energy that will never leave us. We started full speed and have never put the breaks on even whilst we we're changing members. (A good examples is doing a European tour with Theory of Deadman with a stand in singer 3 weeks after our original singer left the band)
Tell a bit about the "Unbreakable" EP and why should people buy it?
Unbreakable is a 7 track E.P which we released in May 2011 to introduce the world to the new Heaven's Basement. You should by it as it's a collection of songs that we've put our heart and soul into and has a real story behind them. Most of the songs on the E.P we're recorded live. We've not a band who are trying to fit into a scene, we play the music we love to play and write the lyrics that mean something to us, if people relate to them, then great.
You have released 2 EPs as Heavens Basement. It is time for a full album. Haven't you been offered any deals or are you just picky?
We have been offered a number of deals since we started but they all seemed like a step back for us. Things are changing now and we're talking to people who we think understand the band as we do. We've always been cautious over who to let into our camp, a lot of the reason for that is coming from bad pervious experiences. There's a lot of people in the industry who think a band should work for them, WRONG, those people work for the band. Fair enough, the band has a job to do aswell and we greatly appreciate the work people do to help a band especially in the early days when theirs not much (if any) money in it, but there's too many horror stories of idiots in the music business that don't work for the bands best interests, those people all need to fuck off and not mess with peoples dreams and work. We've built up a great team around us now that it's an absolute pleasure to work with. The debut album plans are underway as we speak. It's the most exciting time in the life of Heaven's Basement at the moment.
You played Download festival 2011. How was it?
Awesome, it's a pleasure to play at a site such as Donnington. We actually played an acoustic show and enjoyed every second of it !
How would you categorize the style of the band? And did you ever consider or try playing other styles of music than the one you are playing now?
We're an English hard rock band that had built our reputation on touring the every corner of the country and beyond, we're a rare breed, there's not many of us around.
Can you share with us one or two of your favourite moments with the band?
Everyone show is a highlight for me personally, no matter if its playing a small club or an Arena supporting a big name band. We approach every show the same, we want to make a club gig feel like an arena gig and an arena gig feel like a club show. The other highlight is when we jamming a new song that we're excited about and we all look at each other with that look of 'Yes, this new song is badass!!, we can't wait for people to hear it!' We've been lucky enough to tour in over 20 countries, which is another highlight, we all enjoy visiting new places and meeting different people.
How is the writing process in the band?
Very free, ideas come from everyone. Sometimes someone will just have a riff which we'll all jam on, other times someone will come to the table with a full song idea.
What brought you on the path to becoming a musician? Did you ever consider or take any other paths through life besides music?
My father was a drummer so that's how I got started. Never considered another paths as I've never been interested in anything else, apart from when I was 4 or 5 I wanted to be a farmer haha.
Do you have any idols? If yes, who?
Bonham, Cozy Powell and Ole Gunner Solskjear the Manchester United striker.
Do you have any regrets looking back at your career?
None, I've got nothing to complain about at all. Had some hard times in bands previous to Heaven's Basement but you learn from everything. Some of the best things I've learned are the things not to do.
Are there particular songs in your catalogue that the fans love but you're not particular fond of yourself?
No, I enjoy playing all our songs.
What do you think about the state of the music industry today?
It is what it is, there's a lot of scene bands that I don't really want anything to do with but theres a lot of great bands too doing their thing. Heaven's Basement doesn't pay much attention to certain aspects of 'The music industry' we do what we love to do for our enjoyment, it just so happens people seem to like it. We're quite happy to live slightly outside of everyone else.
Can you describe a typical day in your life?
Wake up, eat, maybe do some exercise, check emails, play some music, eat, play some drums. Other days might include going to a gig, the pub, visiting home. Quite simple, that's how I like it.
What's the craziest thing that has ever happened on a tour?
We've got great stories from everyone tour, we got stuck in Hamburg for 5 days in summer 2009 which turned out to be really fun ha! Me and rob also came back from Sweden full of insect bites like you'd never seen! The German police seem to love to pull us over eveytime we tour Germany, their convinced we're carrying weapons. We had to give them a backhander on one tour of Germany due to some damaged property by a member of HB (I was an accident)
..Oh yeah, me and Sid managed to have a night out in Stuttgart and drink for free in a bar all night by claiming to be the house band. They stopped at around 3am when we ordered about 30 shots for some random people we had met. To be honest there's been a running theme with free bar drinks on tour, we have our ways and our games for this which I won't share with you
Can you reveal the future plans for Heavens Basement?
We're going to be doing our debut album this year (we plan) with an early 2012 worldwide release.
