Events and Reports - Withering Surface - Withering Surface and Raunchy at Musikcaféen, Aarhus 09/13/2002
Written by Anders

This concert featured two great Danish metal bands - Raunchy and Withering Surface. Raunchy plays a sort of hybrid metal, and sounds a bit like Fear Factory. Withering Surface on the other hand plays melodic death metal, and is often compared to Swedish In Flames.

Raunchy opened the show with Crack Of Dawn from their first and so far only album Velvet Noise. From the first song and throughout the rest of the concert I was very impressed with their performance. I knew their album was good, but one thing is to make a good album, and another is to make a good live performance.

They played all nine songs from Velvet Noise, and furthermore they had guest vocals from Jacob Bredahl (Hatesphere) on a couple of them. The highlight of the show was definitely when they played Bleeding - my favorite on Velvet Noise.

In Wacken Withering Surface had disappointed me a bit, so I was really hoping to get a better show from them this time - fortunately they played better than ever. There were no errors this time, and the band played a nice selection of new and old numbers. The ones I can remember are: Scarlet Silhouettes, Beautybeast, Breed What You Kill, Dancing With Fairies, Joyless Journey, Separation, Walking On Phantom Ice, Future World (a Pretty Maids cover) and a number from their coming album. I think that's all of them, but I might have forgotten one or two.

I must admit I hadn't expected to hear Withering Surface play a Pretty Maids number - neither had Steen and Tajs, who were also at the concert, but I think they enjoyed it! I have an insane conspiracy theory that someone from WS has read in Steen's Wacken diary, that he chose to hear Pretty Maids instead of WS in Wacken. Well, that is probably just me being paranoid - hmm.

It is no secret that I like the Scarlet Silhouettes album better than the two latest The Nude Ballet and Walking On Phantom Ice - therefore the numbers Scarlet Silhouettes and Beautybeast were the absolute highlights of the concert for me. But there were really no bad numbers in this concert. Thanks to Michael Andersen (vocals) and Jacob Krogholt (guitar) for the chat after the concert.

Concert rating (Raunchy): 8/10
Concert rating (Withering Surface): 9/10
