In late eighties Hair metal peaked.
Charlotte was yet another band striving for success.
My first acquaintance with
Charlotte was in 1990 when I read a piece on their new demo tape - an 11 track cassette that was up to standard with Warrant,
Danger Danger and Poison. The demo made me curious but I had no idea that I had to wait 20 years till I got a chance to check out the music of
Charlotte.
Even though the band was compared to aforementioned bands
Charlotte was a bit different compared to the Glam Metal bands topping the charts.
Charlotte plays mature bluesy Hard Rock. The band is clearly influenced by 70's Hard rock and if you should compare them to the bands back then it would be Soul Kitchen, Graveyard Train or a bluesy version of Skid Row.
The lead song off the album is
Siren - a
tough mid-tempo rocker. In general a few more up-tempo tunes would have suited "Medusa Groove". It grooves for sure but when you hear a song like
Got Love on the Line you want more rocking tunes.
"Medusa Groove" is a mixture of 70's Rock and Blues all stirred up with inputs of the 80's era.
Charlotte worked hard and wanted badly to be successful, but it should be on their own terms. There is a moody vibe to the album and a timeless mark. Also singer Eric Ganz's expressive voice deserves a mention.
Eonian Records is a re-issue label and one has to recognize their top notch packaging. They put out unreleased material mostly compiled from cassettes. However, the quality is very high and also kudos to Jeff Diehl for doing such a great mastering.
Sadly the artwork doesn't match the content, but don't let the artwork prevent you from checking out
Charlotte.
