It is a grateful task being fan of
Richie Kotzen. Kotzen is productive and releases an album once a year. Personally I surrendered in 2003 with "Change" and ever since his albums have been very consistent.
Kotzen is a multi faced musician. His latest release "Return of Mother Heads Family Reunion" was a return to his soul influences and "Peace Sign" follows up in a crossover of soul, Rock and Blues.
Richie Kotzen started his professional career with an instrumental guitar album. However, the focal point of Kotzen's music is his soulful voice. The opening track
My Messiah is classic Kotzen and could have been on any of his albums.
Richie Kotzen is a skilled songwriter with lots of melody in his songs. His guitar tone is great and you can hear when it's Kotzen.
"Peace Sign" is a diverse release. Richie sounds best when he is rocking hard, playing the blues on
Long Way From Home or playing acoustic ballads like
Catch up to Me.
Your Entertainer and
We're All Famous are mixed bags of pop funk soul and the only tracks on "Peace Sign" that doesn't work.
I really like the vibe on the album, but "Peace Sign" lacks the standout tracks like
Fooled Again and
You're Crazy from "Return of Mother Heads Family Reunion".
Richie Kotzen has worked his way to being one of my favorite artists and while I am not totally blown away by "Peace Sign" it is still solid craftsmanship and you can never get tired of Richie's vocals and playing.
