Second batch of Eonian Records' vaults includes
Chicago Rockers
UZI. In the late 80's the band ruled the
Chicago scene and later moved to
Los Angeles to "make it", but the music scene had changed dramatically for a band playing kick ass Hard Rock.
This 10 track compilation answers why
UZI didn't break through. The band has some strong tunes, but lacks the hit songs. The band is pretty diverse spanning from heavy on
Do What I Do to pure 80's Ratt N' Roll on
Rocker. Like all "Hair bands"
UZI also penned a ballad and
Away from My Heart actually ranks among their best songs with a nice guitar solo from Gary Vail.
Raise Hell was recorded back in 1986 and features Chip Z'Nuff on bass. For a Chip Z'Nuff collector like myself this is the true treasure of "Madhouse".
Raise Hell is very typical for the time era driven by a great chord progression.
The songs are made up from various demos recorded in the period 1984 - 1991. Therefore the sound quality is also miscellaneous. The booklet has got "behind the songs" notes on all 10 songs, which is a nice addition. Lead singer and songwriter Nicholas Flynt has a great set of pipes and in general
UZI is a bit heavier than the average Hard Rock bands of that era.
Eonian Records has once again given us the opportunity to time travel back to the days when music was about having fun.
UZI had a reputation as a strong live act, but this disc doesn't underline that completely.
