Band Profile
What is your name and your current position in the band?
Jan Grijpstra, the drummer of the band.
How would you categorize the style of the band? And did you ever consider or try playing other styles of music than the one(s) you are playing now?
Symphonic rock, and no, not really. We gradually went from a more staccato (metal) sound to a more groovy rock sound, however.
What is your latest album and why should people buy it?
It is called altitude and people should buy it if they like symphonic rock with some progressive elements and one hell of a singer.
Tell us about the history of the band. More specifically, when was the band formed, how did you meet, and have there been any particular highlights or low points in your career, any crucial events that have taken you where you are today?
You have the right person for the job, I am the only one left that started with the band back in 1997. So we found the low point already (me still being in the band, hehe). The high points must be that we played on the most amazing festivals throughout Europe, and are up till now making the music we love.
Was there ever a time when you wondered if your band would remain just a local outfit and never make it in the industry?
Yes, I never actually dreamed of being where we are now. Still alive and kicking and being a recognized band in the scene.
Can you share with us one or two of your favourite moments with the band?
Being on tour together must be a favourite and also the rehearsals are great fun (we don't do them very often, maybe that is the reason).
How is the writing process in the band?
We write the structures of the songs separately, and the send each other the progress. So we don't spend a lot of time together before going into the studio.
What brought you on the path to becoming a musician? Did you ever consider or take any other paths through life besides music?
I recently obtained a PhD in Microbiology and work fulltime in a lab. So this is a big part of life besides music. I started to play the drums when I was about 12 and never stopped, this is more of a passion I guess.
Do you have any idols? If yes, who?
I like the band Faith no More. They are (were) able to mix virtually any style in their sound and get away with it.
Do you have any regrets looking back at your career? For example any songs or even full albums that you regret recording? If so, what made you regret it?
No, our whole career is one big learning process, so it is impossible to skip certain steps in this process.
Are there particular songs in your catalogue that the fans love but you're not particular fond of yourself?
Not that I know of . we just play the songs we like most, hopefully the people agree.
How important do you rate the lyrical side of your albums?
Pretty important, I occasionally write a lyric, but nowadays the brothers Jens and Mats write most of them. It is not that we want to make a statement, they are more about our personal thoughts and feelings.
What do you think about the state of the music industry today?
It feels like a rush, a lot of CD's are released every month and people do not take (or have) the time to really dig into a record. Also the have a hard time to survive due to less sales. I am not in the situation that I can live solely on music, so I cannot say that it affects me very hard.
What do you think is the best way to fight music piracy?
Make CD's cheaper. Maybe by selling them directly via the record labels instead of in shops. I do not hope that we will end up with only digital downloads. It always feels great when you have a real CD with including artwork in your hands.
Do you have a life philosophy? If yes, what is it?
Don't stress out too much, everything will be just fine in the end.
Can you describe a typical day in your life?
My typical day is on the lab, The special days are on stage.
What do you like to spend your time with besides music?
Playing sports.
What's the craziest thing that has ever happened on a tour?
Getting our bus (thoroughly) inspected for weed (in South Germany), by undercover police (dressed up like metal fans).

What is your favourite joke?
My jokes (on paper) are almost never funny, so I skip this one.
Can you tell us about any future plans for you and your band?
Hopefully doing a tour and making a videoclip.
