Band Profile

What is your name and your current position in the band?

My nickname is "Boubou", I'm the rhythm guitarist/Lead singer

Tell us about the history of the band. More specifically, when was the band formed, how did you meet, and have there been any particular highlights or low points in your career, any crucial events that have taken you where you are today?

I, Boubou started the project on my own in 2003. I then moved to London to make things happen and by looking on Internet found a couple of guys. We had some guys coming and leaving so not strong line-up until 2006. The band was complete in 2006 with Vik on lead guitar, Chris on Bass and Rob on Drums.

With members from France, Hungary, Canada and UK, Thulium has become one of the most International bands in the music industry. Thulium is actually gigging a few times each month in the London are. These are the moments when we really enjoy ourselves, when we are on stage rockin, when the crowd headbangs on our tunes and think "hey, these guys aren't bad at all" ;)

Was there ever a time when you wondered if your band would remain just a local outfit and never make it in the industry?

Yes, it's still the case right now. We're getting better and better. Loads of people keep telling us that they love our songs and we should get big one day; unfortunately, we didn't get noticed so far. We've sent loads of invitations to labels to come and check us out live but we never had anyone from a label coming. It's very frustrating to put so much hard work into it and not having people coming to see us. We stay in the shadow for now.

What is your latest album and why should people buy it?

We've released an EP album, which is for promotion only. We've sent it to labels with a professional package, but 99% of the CDs probably ended up in the bin without being listened to, unfortunately.

How would you categorize the style of the band? And did you ever consider or try playing other styles of music than the one(s) you are playing now?

We're doing some alternative rock. This is quite straight. We're not too heavy but we're heavy enough for people to head bang. We stick to it because it seems to fit.

Can you share with us one or two of your favourite moments with the band?

Live gigs, that is 100% sure! We love being on stage with a crowd cheering for our songs. It's the best feeling ever!

How is the writing process in the band?

Well, we're lucky to be strong songwriters on our own. So we play songs from everyone. We intend to try to write songs as a band soon, all together, to see if it is even better. We'll see. So far, we got some strong tunes and good riffs.

What brought you on the path to becoming a musician? Did you ever consider or take any other paths through life besides music?

Well. I personally left my own country for that purpose, leaving all my friends and family behind. So it would be nice to be signed after 5 years! LOL
But since we're not signed as a band, the 4 of us got day jobs.

Do you have any idols? If yes, who?

All the band members got different influences. Our drummer who is the youngest of us all is into old school Metal, like Sabbath or old Megadeth tunes. Our lead guitarist likes to shred and play heavy so is inspired by children of Bodom or Arch enemy. The bassists and I are quite open to any headbanging style, as long as it's heavy rock and Metal. Personally, as a singer rhythm guitarist, I look up to guys like Dave Grohl and James Hetfield, but who doesn't? :P

Do you have any regrets looking back at your career? For example any songs or even full albums that you regret recording? If so, what made you regret it?

What we simply regret is that so far, no one that could give us a record deal came to our gigs, despite our invitations.

Are there particular songs in your catalogue that the fans love but you're not particular fond of yourself?

No. If you can't enjoy your own songs, your fans won't enjoy them either.

How important do you rate the lyrical side of your albums?

As the singer, for the songs we had no lyrics on, I actually write them (if another writer ask me to keep some lyrics he wrote, I stick to it.). English not being my mother tongue, my first songs were really "stupid" in terms of lyrics; but since lyrics became more important to me, I kept the riffs, the background music and re-wrote those lyrics. It can be about anything. Actually I like not being explicit and people wondering what the sentences mean. And I don't always explain either. Loads of artists actually do it this way!

What do you think about the state of the music industry today?

It's getting harder. Their budgets dropped significantly over the last 5 years. Getting signed is even harder, unfortunately for us; so I don't think much of it.

What do you think is the best way to fight music piracy?

The industry is already working on that, with a software like Napster.
But is there really a way to fight piracy? I don't think so. I think we're too far beyond that point no. Pirates will always find a way I'm afraid.

Do you have a life philosophy? If yes, what is it?

Time is never wasted when you're wasted all the time.

Can you describe a typical day in your life?

Oh no, it's too boring for each of us; we will answer that question once we'll get signed. LOL

What do you like to spend your time with besides music?

The usual things, movies, video games, having fun with buddies (that usually involves a lot of booze!)...yeah, the usual things that people of our age do!

What's the craziest thing that has ever happened on a tour?

We've done some crazy things and probably you expect something funny in here. However, in our case, as sad as it is to say, the craziest thing that happened was that our drummer got beaten up in the streets...and ended up in the hospital! That was real fucked up!

You're heading off to live on a deserted island for a couple of years with your portable entertainment system... Which albums, movies or books would you bring? (Max. 3 of each)

Albums: Black album by Metallica, the end of heartache by Killswitch engage, we are not alone by Breaking Benjamin

Movies, mmhh...probably lord of the rings, the 3 of them!

And books...mmh...does magazines count? Cuz if it's a deserted island, I think playboy, Penthouse and Hustler is just what we need!

What is your favourite joke?

What do you call someone who hangs around with musicians?
A drummer.

Can you tell us about any future plans for you and your band?

Getting signed would be good. Then we'll tell you more

Thanks for answering these questions. Now you are free to write a few lines to our readers.

Thanks, well, maybe we'll never get signed (I hope not) so at least, here is a bit of promotion; join the legion; we hope you'll enjoy our tunes. The webpage is:

Keep rockin!
