For a year or two Georgia Satellites ruled the world being one of the biggest bands. Georgia Satellites was an old fashioned band that made a great debut record, but earned their reputation with their live shows. They worked up their reputation the old fashioned way, but still their run was too short.
Lead singer Dan Baird has been making a few solo records with moderate success. For his new album he teamed up with Georgia Satellites drummer Mauro Magellan and guitar ace Warner E. Hodges (also guitar player in Jason and the Scorchers).
The first 3 tracks are far the best on the record. Damn Thing to Be Done grooves and swing just like the good old Georgia Satellites days. Warner E. Hodges is amazing on Crooked Smile since the guitars really adds a special groove and feel to the song. Dan Baird's vocal sounds like its in top shape.
After this hectic opening the album tends to become hillbilly rock and the glow, nerve and savagery that characterized the opening songs are lost. Indeed songs like Champagne Sparkle and Lazy Monday are respectable, but several songs get tiring for example I know what its like and even Warner E. Hodges' tasty leads on She Dug me Up cannot save it from being a bit meaningless.
Dan Baird and Homemade Sin are true to their roots and still play country bluesy Rock N' Roll. Just like Georgia Satellites this kind of music is much better performed live in concert.Written by
