How do you surpass the perfect record? The answer is quite simple; You cannot! Enuff Z'Nuff "Strength" is my all time favorite record and now singer
Donnie Vie has re-recorded the entire album acoustic.
"Extra Strength" is a mission bound to fail...................however, Mr. Vie has created a great record, which pays tribute to the original 1991 masterpiece and yet has something new to offer. The songs that work best are surprisingly the electric
Missing You and
The World is a Gutter. Vie still has that special rasp in his voice and he sounds amazing.
Donnie has also taken artistic freedom. He chose not to record the only standard track on "Strength"
Something For Free and added the Beatles classic
In My Life and
Its no Good, which originally was on Chip and Donnie "Brothers".
"Strength" certainly is one of the most sophisticated - if not the most sophisticated - album to be released from any Hard Rock band of that era. Enuff Z'Nuff plays numerous instruments on that record like Mellotron, Cello, Violin and Piano etc. The album has several layers and still Donnie has managed maintain original nerve and force of the songs despite being stripped down. The only song that doesn't transform well is
Mothers Eyes and somehow it's just impossible to outshine
Blue Island in its original version.
If this album does all right Donnie plans to give more Enuff Z'Nuff albums this treatment. That is one of my strongest New Year wishes for 2008.
