Events and Reports - The Quireboys - Live at Kloften festival, Denmark June 30th 2007
Written by Michael

After seeing Quireboys 2 times in Hamburg on the "Well Oiled" tour and latest Quireboys concert was only 2 weeks prior at Sweden Rock festival, I felt blessed that Quireboys finally came to Denmark to play Kloften festival.

Kloften festival is a small festival with 7.000 visitors. Except for Jeff Healey the festival was primarily Danish acts and the main emphasis certainly wasn't on Rock music.

The weather had been showing itself from its worst and wettest side by pouring down since the festival started. When the RevelationZ delegate arrived at the festival on the last day of the 3-day festival it was muddy all over. The rain continued to pour down the whole day, but luckily the clerk of the weather is a Quireboys fan, so the rain stopped approx. 2 hours before Quireboys were about to hit the stage.

Before the show I hooked up with the band in their trailer. Quireboys don't just dress as gentlemen they are gentlemen. Sharp dressed in their pin striped suits they entertained yours truly and I got the story behind Lorraine Lorraine plus the sad confirmation that Spike´s solo album "It's a treat to be alive" isn't released yet even though it was recorded years ago. Steen even got to request Take me Home tonight and overall it was entertaining with a few stories that I cannot share. The boys flew over the day prior and were in great mood despite having a few drinks the night before to Jeff Healey's show.

The band got around an hour and 15 minutes on stage. Despite this being a sold out festival Quireboys brought some fans to the festival and I am sure that they gained several new ones. The band played better and sounded better than ever. They played songs from all albums with a setlist alike their recent brilliant live DVD.
However, the "Well Oiled" songs were downgraded a bit and main emphasis was on the debut "A Bit of what you fancy". Quireboys are currently recording their new album and according to the band it will be very much in the same vein as the debut.

Don´t Bite the Hand that feeds Ya opened the party - just like at Sweden Rock festival. After the song a relieved Spike announced from the stage "The sun has come out for the Quireboys". Finer Stuff was followed by another "Bittersweet and Twisted" song Tramps and Thieves. This is Rock N' Roll has become an instant live favorite along with the bouncing Lorraine Lorraine.

Quireboys managed to capture to most of the audience with their straight ahead Rock N´Roll despite most of the crowd wasn't familiar with the bands music. The front rows were bouncing when they fired off Hey You, which was followed by one of the evenings highlights; There She Goes again, which sounded amazing with Spike in vocal topform.

A heartfelt version of I Don´t Love you Anymore sounded fresh. Compared to the Sweden Rock gig we got treated to a great version of Take Me Home tonight, but the best part of this show was when they played Searchin´ from "This is Rock N' Roll". The arrangement is changed a bit, but that's in favor of emotion. Searchin´ comes out touching live with Spike´s moving vocals as the natural centre.

Spike voice was strong and he really sounded powerful. Keith Weir´s piano playing was better than ever and I look forward to hearing him on the new album since "Well Oiled" was more AC/DC compared to the piano tunes on their first two albums.

Guitarist Paul Guerin is now well integrated in the band. Ever since I saw him first time I have been a fan of his playing. His Les Paul has a warm and rocky tone. Paul Guerin and Guy Griffin is a dynamic duo.

At Sweden Rock festival I couldn't recognize Guy Griffin with his "new look". He has grown a beard and the hair is long again. On stage he doesn't seem as "shy" anymore and he is more outgoing on stage. His slide playing and solos is almost as strong a trademark of the band as Spike´s hoarse voice. Drummer Pip was solid and new bassist was young Jimmi Jimmi, who passed the test of playing Nigel Mogg´s parts.

While most of the festival crowd was older and probably dug Quireboys because of their irresistible Stones/Faces feel I was surprised that a gang of teenagers behind me was singing along to all Quireboys tunes.

Quireboys singer Spike has been tipsy every time I have seen him and while Quireboys were too Rock N´Roll for Whitesnake on their tour in 2004, RevelationZ delegates (aka Danish Vikings) tried to show the nice Englishmen how to drink in Denmark. To quote Spike from the "Lost in Space" live album before playing Sex Party "We're gonna have a serious drink after the show"

A great performance! Quireboys just keeps sounding better. They are one of the few bands that I am not vexed at never seeing live in their original line-up. This band is much stronger and they sound better than ever. The new album must be killer and anytime I would go see the Quireboys.

"Old time quality Rock N´Roll" - Made in England from the finest ingredients".... They are one of my favorite bands, who always have put on a stellar performance the times I have seen them!!!

Apparently the festival wanted to book the band for next year's festival. I cross my fingers that they will be back.
