Volbeat is back with the follow up to the critical acclaimed"The strength/The sound/The songs". "Rock the Rebel/Metal the Devil" debuted at number 1 in
Volbeat´s home country Denmark and the band scored themselves a pure hit with
The Gardens Tale.
The production is great. The guitars and drums sound pompous not unlike Bob Rock´s production on
Metallica´s "Load" and "Reload" albums. Namely mid-nineties
Metallica sounds like an inspiration for the band. The song
Mr. & Mrs. Ness has a similar groove to those "Load"/"Reload" songs.
However, I cannot understand the fascination for this band since they sound mediocre. Not particular bad or particular good either.
Volbeat got a few great tunes; the Johnny Cash (on speed) inspired
Sad Man´s Tongue, the aforementioned groove kicker
Mr. & Mrs. Ness and the definitive album highlight
River Queen.
Mastermind Michael Poulsen knows his musical craftsmanship. Quality wise the song writing is stamped approved, but the vocal accent could be improved a lot. Michael Poulsen sounds like Glenn
Danzig - but a bit more monotone, which tends to label
Volbeat as a discount crossover between
Metallica and
Danzig/Misfits.
"Rock the Rebel/Metal the Devil" is consistent and works as an album. However,
Volbeat needs more stand-out songs and more variation in the vocals to convince yours truly that this album deserves to the metal album to top the charts.
Volbeat has ambitions to chart outside the borders of their home country and that will only succeed if they make the aforementioned adjustments.
