Lemon Recordings bring the European release of BulletBoys "Greatest Hits - Burning Cats and amputees", which originally saw the light of day in USA in the year 2000.
BulletBoys' debut album hit the stores in 1988 and became a hit album. The debut is along with the follow up "Freakshow" the two best BulletBoys records. "Greatest hits" are re-recordings of BulletBoys material with main focus on the 2 previous mentioned records.
The debut album is represented with the party rocker
Hard as a Rock, the hit single
Smooth up in ya and the cover version
For the Love of Money. The
Van Halen clone
Shoot the Preacher is impeded by the production. BulletBoys was often accused of copying
Van Halen - however,
F#9 symbolizes BulletBoys' own style 100 percent. The riff is great and Marq Torien's characteristic vocals make no doubt whose singing. Former
King Kobra guitarist Mick Sweda's ripping fills is the icing of the cake.
From "Freakshow"
Hang on St. Christopher is the only remake that doesn't work. Even though BulletBoys' third record "Za Za" was hardly noticed "Greatest hits" also includes 2 songs off that album.
When Pigs Fly is alternative but the swaggering beat makes it a good tune.
Bulletboys remake of Montrose's
Rock Candy was originally featured on the soundtrack to "Waynes World". Luckily it's included here as well as a funny cover of the old classic
Something Good.
BulletBoys material still holds up today. The band released an album in 2003 called "Sophie" but singer Marq Torien was the only remaining member from their glory days.
The production is dark, so beware since many would characterize it as bad. The production is definitely not in the same league as Ted Templeman's super productions on their first albums, but it sounds very raw.
Marq Torien's voice sounds a bit worn, but Marq still sings his ass off and does a remarkable job on these re-recordings.
The songs are still good and therefore
Bulletboys earns the solid grade 6.
