Being the outfit for guitarist /composer Nikolo Kotzev, the Bulgarian musician has decided to celebrate his endeavors with
Brazen Abbot with a live recording. Having spent the last decade, so to speak, working with the likes of Glenn Hughes,
Jorn Lande, Doogie White, Joe Lynn Turner, and just about any excellent vocalist, Kotzev has chosen Turner to front this show right off the heals of the
Guilty as Sin record.
Lots of Deep Purple/Rainbow reminiscent cuts performed with the Hammond taking center stage at times (courtesy of Lars Pollack), most notable in
"Supernatural," "Mr. Earthman," and
"Road to Hell," but more complex performances include
"Guilty as Sin," and
"I Surrender," where the crowd becomes new members of the band, obviously Kotzev brings his knack for complex material with him. Two acoustic performances are included here, the ballad
"I'll be Free" and the bonus studio track, another ballad, as if you couldn't tell by the title, called
"Love is on Our Side."
Kotzev proves himself worthy as a live performer, with help from his friends, and he pulls it off well, the guys in his backup band are great players, worthy of having their own moments within the show with Pollack's keyboard solo, and of course, no concert is complete with out a drum solo, and Thomas Broman provides us with that.
A Decade of Brazen Abbot is one single concert, rather than a series of shows, so the record itself has a more personal vibe to it; the mix fluctuates emphasizing certain instruments during solos, overall, it's a loud rock concert, where both the crowd and the band share their enthusiasm. Recorded at a gig in Sofia, in the heart of Kotzev's home country, the performance is fairly tight; you can tell Turner is running around on stage, he might sound out of breath at times, but that's all part of his stage presence.
