Sinn - The Runes of Odin
Sinn is based in Portland, Oregon in the US with a music that can best be described as black metal. Band founder, singer and guitarist Vido Sinn is the former lead guitarist of Jester Moon, but decided to leave this band to follow a darker path, his own Sinn project. He is not exactly a happy christian and even though there is nothing satanical about the music, his hatred to all things christian shines through on most of the songs.

What I like on this, their debut cd, is his vocals and the compositions. A deep scream tells us that this singer is seriously pissed off at someone. Sometimes in the more quiet parts, he sings with a clean voice which is a nice contrast to the evil screams. The fast opener "Sanctified in Flame" has some nice themes (as long as you can come by the horrible intro) and the slow "Protocol" is very melodic with some dark and emotional screaming.

Though not exactly original, the guitars have a few pretty cool parts but most of the time they just lay the foundation. Noone can deny that Vido has the technical skills of a lead guitarist, but the solos on The Rune of Odin completely fall through. A horrible lead guitar sound and poor production doesn't do much for the sound, but apart from that they are seriously lacking in melody and soul of any kind.

Apparently there is a drummer in the band, but the drums on the cd come from a drum machine. I'm not a big fan of drum machines, but I have heard some that were really good. Not so with this one. It could have been the drum sound of a really lousy keyboard for all I know. And speaking of keyboards, the keyboard sound they have here is horrible! There are parts where I actually started laughing when I heard it the first time. Not a very good impression to make as a black metal band.

There are good things on The Rune of Odin. I like the vocals, some of the guitar parts and the compositions as a whole are not bad at all. Not original by any means, but then again, that's not always that important. However, the keyboards and drums are horrible. Please fix them for the next release. What surprises me is that this is actually a signed band releasing their debut album. If this was an unsigned band sending out demos, I could understand the sound, but a signed band??? I rate this cd 4, since there are some good things on it. But overall, the album isn't very good. This is definitely a listen before buying. But if you can get by the lousy production, horrible drums and keyboards, the rest is not that bad.
