Avantasia - Angel of Babylon
Monday, June 6, 2011
I agree with Stuart that if you took the best tracks from "Angel of Babylon" and "Wicked Symphony" and combined them, you'd have a really great release. That being said, the latter is clearly the better disc of the two. There is a good deal of variety - from what I would consider hard rock to power metal. It's definitely worth a few listens to get the feel for it, as I feel the Avantasia work has greatly surpassed Edguy's recent output. Kudos to Tobias for being able to pull together such vocalists as Kiske, Lande, Allen, Owens, etc.

Stratovarius - Elements Part 1 (Reissue)
Wednesday, April 20, 2011
I have always found it interesting that Strato fans tend to gravitate toward the band's early work - largely around their typical uptempo songs. I'm in the minority as I think "Episode" was their strongest work, prior to "Elements Part 1." I don't know that I could ever use the word, "heavy" to describe Stratovarius' music, but I prefer their work that leans in that direction - which tends to be mid-tempo. There just feels like so much more drama and atmosphere, well beyond guitar shredding.

Eternity X - The Edge
Thursday, March 10, 2011
In checking out your staff's top-rated releases, I have to say that I was impressed to find Eternity X's brilliant "The Edge" on the list. Its inclusion goes a long way toward validating the entire list. It is unfortunate that such a masterpiece flew completely under the radar and that Keith has not released anything since.

Psychotic Waltz - Everything
Wednesday, March 9, 2011
I picked up a copy of "A Social Grace" from a used CD store back in 1997. All I can say is, what a find. Truly a unique sound - raw progressive metal from a band that is really under-appreciated, even in metal circles. I am envious that you will see them live. I'd love to see them play stateside.
