Band Profile

What is your name and your current position in the band?

JOCHEN TRUNK : BASS

How would you categorize the style of the band? And did you ever consider or try playing other styles of music than the one(s) you are playing now?

It is Death Metal in the DISBELIEF-style! I started playing music in the late 80´s,
first a Heavy Metal band, than a Thrash Metal-band! I did also play in a Big Band,
so I already had some experience in playing other styles!

What is your latest album and why should people buy it?

PROTECTED HELL gives people the best impression of the DISBELIEF -sound
and shows the developments we did from past to present! It sounds great and
with the free DVD added where a lot of live footage is to be seen they get a very
good  view of what DISBELIEF is about!

Tell us about the history of the band. More specifically, when was the band formed, how did you meet, and have there been any particular highlights or low points in your career, any crucial events that have taken you where you are today?

DISBELIEF was formed 1990 by vocalist Jagger and guitarist Olly who left the
band in 2006! Me and drummer Kai joined in 1994/1995 , we knew each other
from doing concerts together! The current guitarist Witali we met on a festival in
2007, he replaced Tommy Fritsch and axeman Alex contacted us via MySpace when
Jonas Khalil left the band! Highlights of the career were shows like DYNAMO and WACKEN festival in 1998, also all the tours and shows we did with SIX FEET
UNDER, BOLT THROWER, HYPOCRISY, SLAYER, SEPULTURA, DEATH
ANGEL and a lot more! The low points are always when a guitarist left the band
- this took time and power!

Was there ever a time when you wondered if your band would remain just a local outfit and never make it in the industry?

We never cared about this! Our purpose is to have fun and to do what we want to do!
All the other things happen or not, the music does not get more or less meaning for
you if it gets popular! Self-realization is our focus!

Can you share with us one or two of your favourite moments with the band?

One of mine was a show in Dresden we did in 2002 or 2003, we played the song
ME AND MY WORLD which means a lot to me and the whole crowd got wild
and shared at this time the feeling I have towards this song! Goose spots everywhere!

How is the writing process in the band?

I do all the riffs, do a little arrangement based on a drum beat and show it to
the other guys! Together we decide if the material is worth working on it, if yes
we go into detail, if no we throw it in the trash can!

What brought you on the path to becoming a musician? Did you ever consider or take any other paths through life besides music?

I took this decision with the age of 17 in school, I knew exactly that I am here on
this planet to do music and nothing else! I finished school and from this point on I
followed my aim!

Do you have any idols? If yes, who?

I would not call him idol, but Steve Harris was the bass player who made me practising bass 8 - 10 hours a day, his way of playing influenced me a lot!!

Do you have any regrets looking back at your career? For example any songs or even full albums that you regret recording?  If so, what made you regret it?

Of course there are songs which I do not like that much today, but every single song
tells a little story about me and so there is nothing to regret, I just think and feel
different today!

Are there particular songs in your catalogue that the fans love but you're not particular fond of yourself?

It is difficult to consider every fan and his favourite songs, so we keep on playing the songs that we prefer and hope to reach the majority of our fans!

How important do you rate the lyrical side of your albums?

It is on the same level as the music, the song shall illustrate the lyrics and give them
the necessary deep emotional meaning!

What do you think about the state of the music industry today?

Overcrowded is the best term I can use, too many bands are signed because just of the
reason that they are doing a style that is easy to sell! There is no pushing for individual bands with their own style, just mass industry! But we should not care too much about the industrial things, a good band that is doing a lot of live shows will
conquer fans for their style, the fans are the ones to decide which bands they like!

What do you think is the best way to fight music piracy?

This battle is already lost, the internet is uncontrollable! In my opinion releasing a
CD is just promotion for going on tour, it is nearly impossible for the "small" bands
to earn money with it, so use the internet to spread your music and make more and
more people come to your concerts!

Do you have a life philosophy? If yes, what is it?

Just following the way I have started, being critical towards myself and keep on progressing!

Can you describe a typical day in your life?

For god´s sake I have no typical day, every day has special offers to do, sometimes
just working and earning additional money, sometimes being creative or just practising, or even doing nothing - just relaxing and hanging out with friends!

What do you like to spend your time with besides music?

My family and friends - the most important thing in life!!

What's the craziest thing that has ever happened on a tour?

We did a tour where lots of musicians and technicians fell ill, a virus infected them all, crazy situations like a guy had to shit in plastic bags because you cannot use a bus toilet for that and the driver did not stop because of his strict schedule! Another one shit in his pants because it was too late to reach the toilet - crazy sceneries and I was lucky not to be infected!!

You're heading off to live on a deserted island for a couple of years with your portable entertainment system... Which albums, movies or books would you bring? (Max. 3 of each)

None - I would take this time to get my head free of all this stuff and just taking 3 of them I would prefer to leave everything at home!!

What is your favourite joke?

Sorry, I am not a good joke - reminder!!

Can you tell us about any future plans for you and your band?

Playing live as much  as we can, maybe doing shows in the US or South America...
anywhere on the world!!

Thanks for answering these questions. Now you are free to write a few lines to our readers.

First of all thanks for your interest in DISBELIEF! I just want to invite everyone
to listen to PROTECTED HELL, it is worth doing it! And if you have the chance to see us live you are welcome to our show!! Hope to see you soon, Joe and DISBELIEF
