Events and Reports - Destruction - Live at Aalborg Metal Festival - November 1st, 2003.
Written by Nina

The first time ever I had the pleasure of being swept away by the brutal, pounding sound of Destruction, was at a live concert. Nothing fancy, just a small, cosy place in Sweden, where the Thrash gods delivered an adrenaline packed, raw and tight show, and made me leave the hall with an energized feeling and a wish for more! After listening to the solid comeback album, All Hell Breaks Loose, there was no doubt: I simply fell in love with this intense, speedy and raw Thrash Metal beast!

So naturally I was awaiting tonight's concert with great anticipation, and having spent the day at the great Aalborg Metal Festival, drinking beer, checking out the merchandise stands and seeing a few other bands, I was in an excellent mood.

The German Thrash legends started out strong with Curse The Gods, giving full throttle from point one! I was in the front row, just at the middle of the stage, the best possible spot, and I can't remember any point where I stopped banging my head for more than a few minutes, and when I did, it was only to drink a little beer!

Destruction had an amazing and very contagious energy live, and the atmosphere was excellent! The power and enthusiasm that is displayed at a Destruction gig, is simply stunning, and it's clear that these guys live to play! During a song like Thrash 'Til Death, you can really feel that they live for Thrash Metal, and they have a good sense of crossing the boundaries between stage and audience, it's like a unified explosion of energy!

Screamer Schmier, and riffmeister, Mike Sifringer wore some leather outfits covered in spikes that were like taken out of the 80's (and probably were)! A cool image is nothing that creates a good band, but it surely creates an extra dimension, and add to the feeling that these guys are serious about what they do!

Concerning the setlist, that thing was perfect as well, most songs were from the three albums released since the reunion (All Hell Breaks Loose, The Antichrist and The new Metal Discharge), with some classic tracks thrown in as well, of course they had to play Eternal Ban, and Bestial Invasion, and end the show with Mad Butcher. When my personal favorite, Total Disaster, blasted ahead as the first encore, I was in heaven, jumping as high as I could, screaming and headbanging with all the power I had left!

This surely was a concert to remember, a great journey into the Thrash universe!

Wow, what a concert this was! Destruction was not one of the bands I came to hear at Aalborg Metal festival, but this concert ended up being the highlight of the festival. I can't believe the energy and power these guys performed with. I am only familiar with their newest album Metal Discharge, but after this I will have to check out their previous albums as well. An outstanding concert indeed.
