King Diamond - The Puppet Master
It is with great pleasure I announce that The King is back! ...again... After two weeks of non-stop listening to this promo, The Puppet Master has taken its place alongside of my favorite King Diamond albums (Them, Conspiracy, The Eye & House of God) I had a hard time getting into Abigail Pt. II and was hoping for something a little more capturing this time. Wish granted I must say. The Puppet Master is all that I was hoping for and more! After watching the preview clip of King telling part of the story I had a feeling that this would be special. And special it is indeed. This is also the most theatrical King Diamond album ever, with several new elements being successfully added to the usual mix.

For a change the album doesn't start out with a spoken intro, but sets up the scene by looking back at the horrific events that follow a seemingly innocent show at a puppet theater in Budapest one snowy night close to christmas... I will not tell you more about the story as this is one of the great things when discovering a new King Diamond album. Not having the lyrics made it a bit difficult to understand everything that's going on but I found myself getting more and more into the gruesome story with each listen. While the story is pretty gruesome and contains one of the most brilliantly sick and graphic scenes ever to grace a King Diamond album, there is also an intriguing kind of softness to it, but above all the way the songs are performed makes it feel real and you can actually picture what is going on. That is also what I meant when I said that this is a very theatrical album. I think that the decision to use a female singer in many songs was a great one and only intensifies this aspect. Livia sings in a voice that is very sweet and innocent, but also filled with despair and sadness that fits the story perfect, giving it a great emotional impact.

King himself excels here too. He does not use the highest tones of his voice as much as on earlier albums. Only when it fits the songs does he go all out banshee-wailing, most of the time he is held back and very very melodic, living out the songs with great feeling. Actually Livia gets many of the best vocal melody lines. And when both of them are singing together, harmonising in several songs, the result is really incredible and gives a chilling feeling. I can't wait to see the live show this time around. If she comes along then the stage is set for a show filled with new possibilities, also in the older songs.

The songs are also somewhat different this time around. All of them are extremely melodic and several songs have a great unexpected structure where you don't immediately recognise the chorus. Instead there are a lot of memorable vocal lines that stick in your head. Take a song like Emerencia where that one line makes a great impact. First King sets up the melody ("The moon is high above"), then Livia continues to deliver that one perfect line, each time a little different, but holding the song together while King continues with the story.

Several live and party favorites are bound to come from this album. From the introductory Midnight the show opens with the heavy and powerful title track, which includes two excellent guitar solos. The opening riff in Magic is hard and has a great drive that pervades the whole song. The guitar solos are... well, magic (I mean that) and this is the first song to use both King and Livia's vocals in the chorus with some suberb harmonies. Emerencia is one of my favorites with a captivating atmosphere and King in his usual brilliantly twisted storyteller-mode. The dramatic Blue Eyes gives the story an emotional twist and has one of those killer vocal lines I talked about earlier.

The Ritual is another favorite. It has a fantastic, classic chorus with a huge vocal melody and an epic feel to it. This is a definite sing-a-long for those dark winter nights.

No more me has a classic King opening line and goes on to attack the listener with an increasingly disturbing picture of total puppet transition. Eating is not recommended while listening to this track, where my favorite moment involves a couple of eyeballs... Blood to walk is pretty good, but also one of the most "normal" tracks on the album.

Darkness ranks up there with the best songs King has ever written (That is a long list though...:)) I am really in awe of this one. Livia sings part of the chorus in a voice that completely conveys the feeling of nothingness and despair in a place where there is no hope, and King's counterpoint works great in bulding a climax. He also does a great job acting out the various parts in some very effective voices. The song has a cool drive and when the chorus sets in the outstanding guitarwork creates a thick, heavy background. Especially the ending part is a chilling highlight of the entire album. Perfect, Powerful and touching.

The only two songs I feel are not quite as good as the other ones are So sad and Christmas. So sad is just too... well, sad. Even though it holds a lot of emotion and heartbreak the song goes on for a bit too long and I find this one a little boring after many listens. Christmas tries some neat tricks, but the song feels a little disjointed. I don't feel the "Little drummer boy" reference works as well as it could have here. An honorable mention goes to the most excellent guitar solo though.

The story ends with Living dead, which has a very fitting and emotionally effective ending, conveying the impression of the emptiness of an eternal life.

Thus ends another King Diamond horror story and I must say that I was greatly entertained. I still am and with each listen the album keeps growing.

There are a great number of cool little references to older King work scattered around the album for you to discover. A few are found in The Ritual (1642 imprisonment), Christmas (Lady in black), Blood to walk (The Curse) and several others I'll leave for yourself to discover. Maybe I'm putting too much into this, but I think these little things are really cool.

This promo is only the actual album and does not include the bonus DVD which is available on the Special edition. The DVD has King himself telling the story of The Puppet Master. It is available for preorder at Metal Merchant at the moment with a pretty good price.

This is a King Diamond album with all the good stuff. A grotesque and tragic story, Andy Laroque and Mike Wead delivering some mean guitarwork, Hal Patino on bass and Matt Thompson on drums. All musicians lay the perfect groundwork for King to work his magic. I almost forgot to mention the many brilliant guitar solos and riffs that are scattered all over the album, another blistering performance by Andy and Mike. The atmosphere is thick and filled with spookiness and despair mixed in a cocktail of magic & blood. This time King has renewed himself by incorporating some new elements that work out really well. The production is not as heavy as on recent King albums but here it gives the album an overall softness that fits the story very good.

While the album is quite accessible, it did take a few listens before the album opened up to me, but from then on it has just kept on growing.

All King Diamond fans rejoice! The Puppet Master is a terrific and disturbing album.

That was a real interesting review. It sounds like a great album from every aspect. I'll be catching him live in Chicago on Halloween Eve, the perfect night for a King Diamond concert. I should get a copy of the CD there, if not sooner.

Comment by Thane Elijah Ahrens (Anonymous) - Monday, October 20, 2003
Personally I would have given it a higher score than 8.5 and I feel Christmas and So Sad were strong points in the album. Following Emerencia, they are my my favorite tracks. I think on this release, many people are gonna take it many different ways and there is not going to be that one song that everyone agrees is the best. And musically, it is very comparable to Conspiracy with the horror and tragedy matching Them. Also some elements of the lyrics are reminisent of House of God and a little bit musically too. My only complaint is that the cd isn't long enough. Seems to end too soon. I think the only track comming close to being weak is Blood to Walk. It's too basic of a song. And the opening track could have been a bit better but it was way better than Blood to Walk though. I would have give the cd about a 9.3 due to the song Blood to Walk, the title track needing to be a bit better for an opener, and for the album ending so soon (when it's that good musically and story wise especially, you want it to last a while). Those were the only things keeping it from a perfect 10.

Holy crap!!! To be honest, I didn't quite think King had this kind of album left in him...he has totally eclipsed everything else he has ever done, with the possible exception of Them. This album is superb and deserves nothing less than a 10...musically and thematically it's more complex then HOG or Abigail II, and easily twice as good. the story is at once melancholy, creepy, dark, and powerful. time will tell if it becomes a classic like some of his others...my guess is it probably will.

This album almost made me shit my pants! Abigail 2 was ok, Im a big house of god fan and thought it couldnt get beat but then the puppet master came.A true masterpiece.

Comment by ScarredGod (Anonymous) - Friday, October 24, 2003
FINALLY the King returns with a new CD that matches the brilliance of his earlier stuff (Abigail, Them, Conspiracy). im sorry to say i was growing tired of the King since The Graveyard, apart from a few tracks here and there. But with The Puppet Master i now remember just how magical he could be. i agree with most of the review except i totally love the song "So Sad" with its beautiful mix of King and Livia, god i hope he adds a female vocalist on future projects as well, it adds a whole new dimension. the only tracks that disappoint me are Blood To Walk, which seems to be everyones least fave, and "Living Dead" up until the outro which saves the song and put a great ending on another King Diamond masterpiece.

Yesterday I finally got the ltd. Edition I ordered from Metal Merchant including the bonus DVD with King himself in full makeup, telling the story of The Puppet Master.

Nice packaging and my favorite moment from No more me is even pictured in the very cool booklet :) Excellent! So I make some popcorn and sit down to watch the DVD. I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I gotta say, this is one of the funniest things I have seen in a long time... At first I found it hilarious watching King telling the Puppet Master story for several reasons; There is the strong Danish accent, the wild gestures, the fact that King does not talk directly to the camera most of the time and the candles burning in an already lit room where thin blue curtains do their best to block out the sun outside. Unfortunately after the first five minutes of hysterical bursts of laughter I started getting bored. Mostly because nothing that is said is not already in the lyrics for the album. The short DVD review: This does just not work at all! What would have been really cool would have been a look at the recording of the album, a different way of telling the story with something not told in the lyrics, comments from other band members or just something out of the ordinary in the true King Diamond fashion. I wish the story at least had been told by a man-sized puppet instead of this!

Ok, enough about the DVD, just no reason to freak out if you miss the ltd. DVD edition...

Since I wrote the review I have been listening to the album almost daily and I still find it King's best release since The Eye. It really is magnificent and has some of the best songs ever to grace a King Diamond album (Darkness & Emerencia). The story is still gruesome and even more vivid and alive after reading the lyrics. As long as I forget about the DVD that is... Has anybody else seen this?

Well even though Steen decided to hog this album review for himself:) i went and bought it like every good little fan should! I got the DVD one and i got to say that it was cool to actually see King tell the story but it is kinda cheesy and it really does nothing extra for the CD listen. Basically just tells the story like the album does. Guess they thought seeing King himself would be enough of a treat! not! cool but uneeded! Album kicks ass though....best thing since THEM and Conspiracy in my humble opinion! cheers to the Diamond!
Oh Yeah and great review STEEN!

Yet another King Diamond Materpeice!! I feel this the best album of Kings Career. He hasn't sounded this freash and original in a long time. And i think this may be his most emotional and vivid story. I don't understand peoples dislike of blood to walk as i personally enjoyed it extremly.

This is truly the same King that captivated me about 17 years ago!
Fucking awesome melodies and a vivid story(and very creative).
The best in a long time.I had bought every one of his records/cds and I was getting a little bored so I listened to a "sample" of The Puppet Master.
Well,if I don't get the original I will be an asshole!
(By the way,I say I was getting bored because although House of God is a good album,Abigail 2 is far from being as good as the first part).
HOWEVER,this album kicks ass!A CLASSIC WITHOUT ANY DOUBTS.
I am seeing the King in a few hours in Randolph,NJ and I cannot wait!
It will be the happiest Monday in my life, and you will agree Mondays usually suck,or not?
STAY HEAVY.
(NO fun nor presents this Christmas!)

THE PUPPET MASTER,BLOOD TO WALK and SO SAD were the chosen songs from "The Puppet Master" in Randolph,New Jersey!
They also played classics such as THEM, ABIGAIL, THE EYE OF THE WITCH, HALLOWEEN (fucking insane), THE INVISIBLE GUESTS...
About the last album,I like Blood to walk,I think it is the perfect Diamond's live song.
Awesome show both musical and visually!
My ears are still beeping 24 hours after, but I didn't miss a note!
The KING is back.HAIL the King!

Based on the other reviews I seem to be in the minority, but I was actually expecting more from this KD album. I thought Abigail II was much better. However, I recently saw KD in concert at the Galaxy Theatre in Southern CA, and the new material sounded pretty good live. But of course, the all time greatest KD album is...Abigail!!!!!

Comment by Metal Heart (Anonymous) - Friday, November 14, 2003
Interesting, but I found the songs from the Puppet Master to be very powerful live. After the show I listened to Blood to Walk in my car on my way home and realized what some fans have been complaining about:the guitars could have been more aggressive in the recording.
Probably it was also that I had stood next to a fucking amplifier the whole night and was stone deaf as a consequence...
I liked the song before listening to it live but to my surprise, live it was real loud shit! And that is something that is hard to find,a song that is better live than on record!
Well,KD has always delighted me because you get live exactly the same quality than in the studio.
Other singers are a parody of who they are in a cd player.
Not the King.Shit,this is metal.

I am a huge King Diamond fan and I have to say this album rocks. I think it is definetly the scariest he has done so far. I like all the songs on this and can't see how you can not, it ties the whole story together. Keeping his voice to what I think is as close to original as possible was a very good idea. I do like his banshee screams but it is nice to hear the lower pitches a lot. I do think "Midnight" is somewhat like the openings of his last few albums, and I have to say I love the opening songs from H of God, Voodoo. Well, the King surely prove to us that he always has another trick up his sleeve. And I was disappointed with Abigail II, but The Puppet Master surely makes up for that. LONG LIVE THE KING!!!

Good for San Diego. KD played
Magic and Ritual there and they only played "The Puppet Master", "Blood To Walk", and "So Sad" here in VA. I wished I'd been in San Diego.

I like the cd but I really liked the dvd. You were very spooky! I love the storyline, it was cool

Comment by Rich B (Anonymous) - Monday, November 24, 2003
I forgot to say a few things in my last message. The DVD is definitely a plus and really adds to the cd. I sure wish King would go back to his old make-up, now I guess I need to get another King tattoo. I have his head from the cover of the Conspiracy album. His new make-up would be cheaper and easier to have done. I have to say Emerencia, Blue Eyes and Darkness are my favorite songs from this album but they are all getting more favorable with each listen. I wish King would do a DVD for the older albums, it wouldn't mean as much as The Puppet Master but would be cool to have and see the King tell the story. If anyone is evening reading this Iwill let you know if the new tattoo ever becomes. King make another killer album soon!
"In the Darkness we live our lives, In the darkness we die and die again"!!

Comment by Iblis (Anonymous) - Wednesday, November 26, 2003
This album is by far one of King's best. He has captured the true essence of the pain of being seperated from the one you love. It is a timeless message and one every person can relate to in some way. The songs so sad and christmas are brilliant. So sad rips at your heart as this story is meant to. While christmas shows a twisted type of revenge that shows the anger that one would feel in such a situation.
King is by far the most creative and talented musician I've ever heard.

It's a cool sick story. I am definetely going to purchase the cd. It is a must to have to your KD collection. King Diamond and the rest of the band inspire me and they RULE!

Wow. I mean, wow. I didn't think I would go for Livia, since I am partial to King's falsetto shrieking, but it worked well. "Magic" "The Ritual" "Emerencia", and, of course the title track knocked me on my ass. Kudos, King.

Comment by Adina (Anonymous) - Friday, June 11, 2004
GOOD GOD!!! King has outdone himself, this time. I thought 'Voodoo' and 'The Graveyard' were creepy albums, but they're NOTHING comapred to the intense gothic horror of The Puppet Master (especially the song 'No More Me') That is SUCH a creeeeeeeeeepy song!

Andy LaRocque's singing talents really come out in 'Midnight' how high and low his vocal cords can reach those notes! I have to also agree with Steen! No More Me is DEFINITELY NOT recommended when eating! All the blood and the scalpel, is so horrific that you can almost see the transformation playing out in your mind!

I give, and have always given, King Diamond 2, count 'em, 2 thumbs up!!! YEAH BABY!!!!!

LONG LIVE KING DIAMOND!!!!!!!!!!!

Because In puppet master they didnt show enough 80'S Vocals as all the other albumns. This album shows the soft side of king diamond. But i still think it is a good album. I rate it a 7 out of 10.
Keep rocking on king diamond
