Stevie Rachelle's RLS Records has released
Jim Gillette "Proud to Be Loud", which was recorded in a garage on an 8-track recorder in 1987. Needless to remark that both the sound and the material is marked by the 80's.
Jim Gillette has Nitro mate and guitar virtuoso Michael Angelo on guitar. Both are highly respected.
Jim Gillette has made vocal instruction videos and Angelo has published guitar lessons on video. When Jim toured with Nitro he had a five octave vocal range. The cover displays a heavily tattooed Jim with a broken glass. His strong vocal was able to break wineglasses, which he proved at Nitro's first show at legendary Gazarris.
There is too much screaming and high notes on "Proud to be Loud". Furthermore Jim's voice sounds a little too produced. There is added some kind of effect on his voice, which is shame.
Jim Gillette incorporates his full vocal range in almost all tracks, which is a bit monotonous. A track like
Flash of Lightning displays his diversity.
The highlight of the record is Michael Angelo's great guitar shredding. He uplifts the otherwise below average material. Angelo adds emotional lead playing to the title track and he shines on the show-off instrumental
Nitro - guitar solo, which is a cousin to Eddie Van Halen's
Eruption.
The bonus material contains a track from Angelo and Gillette's band Nitro entitled
Bitch on My Back. Jim's controls his voice and sings mellower, which suits the song. The other 3 bonus tracks are all weak. Organ Donor plays weak alternative rock and the lyrics deal with selling organs on the Internet.
Jim Gillette can scream and hit high notes that make Rob
Halford sound like Peter Steele from Type O Negative. However, the material does not stand the test of time. The ballad
Angel in White has potential and if that was re-recorded I am sure that it would sound great.
This is for fans of Nitro,
Jim Gillette and Michael Angelo only.
