Events and Reports - ZZ Top - Live at Skanderborg Festival, Thursday August 7th
It's was almost impossible to take ZZ Top serious, when they entered the stage looking like a cross-over between Santa Claus and a pimp (check out the picture). Just like a Britney Spears concert - ZZ Top changed wardrobe a few times during the show.
I saw ZZ Top on their "Antenna" Tour in 1995. Honestly, that was a major disappointment with the consequence that I never played any of my ZZ Top records ever since. The little ol' band from Texas started with one of their greatest hits Gimme All Your Lovin - actually a pretty good opener.
Going back to their roots they played a splendid version of Jesus just left Chicago and soon after Rough Boy, which was played with passion reminding me of the good old days. At this point it looked like ZZ Top would play a great concert that could remove the bitter aftertaste from my last ZZ Top concert.
Cheap Sunglasses and I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide both sounded good and kept my full attention. Unfortunately it all went wrong afterwards. All of a sudden I had enough of ZZ Top.
Billy Gibbons wanted to play a new song and dragged the compére on stage to translate. A bit unnecessary because I think everyone understood the words "This is a new song". Luckily the festive compére stayed on stage to excite the audience. The new song entitled Butt Naked was made from the classic ZZ Top formula. ZZ Top played another new song from their forthcoming album featuring Dusty Hill on vocals. Dusty has never been a great singer and his vocals sounded a bit weak at this show.
ZZ Top's boogie-rock gets very boring in the long run. Dusty Hill and Billy Gibbons synchronized stage presence looked like one big joke. Billy Gibbons is a competent guitarist and the rhythm section consisting of Dusty and Frank Beard were consistent. The material is just too monotonous.
They played overdue their time and in my opinion it was too long. After the first hour people began to disappear from the show. They should have cut their set sharp. The last songs could not blur the overall impression of this show even though songs like Legs, La Grange and Tush all are great.
Watching this show was like watching the monkeys in the Zoo. ZZ Top has watered -down their reputation as a great blues-rock band. Today they are one big joke. Don't expect me at any ZZ Top shows anymore.
With Donald Duck comics in mind, they should change name to ZZZzzzzzz top.
