Interview with Johan Reinholdz - Andromeda
This interview is with Johan Reinholdz and focuses on his guitar work in both NonExist and Andromeda. The interview was very informative and a pleasure to conduct. Interestingly, we conversed via ICQ and although may look reasonably short, took almost an hour! So, Enjoy!
Macabre: First off, Andromeda has a new bass player, howcome?.
Johan: you mean Fabian?
Macabre: yes
Johan: well, Jacob rehearsed with us a couple of months, and he handled the playing finebut the personal chemistry between him and us wasnīt that good, not that we are angry with of anything, it just didnīt feel right
Macabre: so - where did you find Fabian and what kind of new playing style does he have to offer?
Johan: martin is his teacher in the Cubase course at the music academy of Malmö and David had met him at parties and so on
Johan: new playing style? We donīt realy know yet, we have only rehearsed with him a couple of times so far. ***
Macabre: So, how do you know he is right for Andromeda if you have only rehearsed a few times? Is it more of an instinct thing?
Johan: yeah, I mean it takes a while before you get to know a person, but you can feel if heīs gonna fit or not pretty fast***
Macabre: Tell me about your plans for the new Andromeda album, how does it differ from the previous albums, ie What should fans be expecting.
Johan: a bit more straight on, less technical I think, but besides that I think people will recognize us. Itīs still gonna be heavy, melodic, original progressive metal
Johan: ***
Macabre: I'm now crossing over to one of your other projects, "NonExist". Your new album with them is coming up. I understand you're searching for a new drummer, so with this in mind, what can fans expect from the upcoming release?
Johan: well, thereīs a lot of preparation for the second Nonexist-album which arenīt made yet, as you said - we have to get a drummer to play, find a basic concept for the artwork, an artist to do it, an album title and the lyrics but the music is already finished, and itīs gonna sound quite different than the firstthe music is slower, heavier, more atmosphere, weīre gonna use more synths on this one and I think it sounds a lot more interesting. There are gonna some fast songs of course, but not many***
Macabre: Yes, which brings me to my next question
Macabre: The lyrics on the previous album "Deus Deceptor" highlight some philosophical/religious themes. Is the lyrics and concept behind the upcoming album going to follow in this direction?
Johan: donīt know really. Iīm not writing them lyrics in Nonexist, Johan Liiva is, so weīll see what he comes up with! It will be interestingI like his lyrics a lot***
Macabre: Just back to your previous remark, why isn't Matte Modin playing drums on the upcoming release?
Johan: Matte is a great drummer and a really nice guy, but his drum-sound ideal isnīt what weīre after. He always has a kind of thin, intense, "whipping" drum sound, and thatīs not gonna work on these new tracks - we want someting heavier and thicker***
Macabre: ok, just before we move on. You co-wrote the lyrics to track 10 "Delirious Tongues". What were you co-writing about, and how do the lyrics reflect on any of your own personal feelings?
Johan: to be perfectly honest - I donīt have a clue, haha. He got stuck with the lyrics and I just helped him complete it. I added some lines here and there... pretty weird huh?***
Macabre: *laugh* yeah
Macabre: ok just moving back now to Andromeda - Your most recent album with them, "II=I" has a continuous theme of skitzophrenia throughout the album. What was the motivation by your band to promote this concept?
Johan: well, not all the songs are about that. The last three tracks, which are connected as a suite are about
schizophrenia and "reaching deep within" also deals with that theme. Martin wrote the lyrics for the "Parasite-suite" and david wrote the lyrics for "reaching..." so it was really coincidence that made that subject come up twice, but of course - itīs an interesting subject. Really scary stuff***
Macabre: So, the song (track 4) "II=I" is not related to this theme?
Johan: no. the title could be, you know - two souls in one head, but itīs not about schizophrenia at all actually. It was written by Martin and it deals with some personal stuff of his, itīs a kind of love song really.
Macabre: *laugh* now that you mention it, the lyrics make a bit more sense.
Johan: ok, hehe***
Macabre: Now, your first album with Andromeda, "extension of the wish" features some very abstract cover art. There is a letter and number on a man's chest (M31). Does this signify anything?
Johan: Itīs the astronomical term for the Andromeda-galaxy***
Macabre: ok, just going back to NonExist (for the last time!). What is the significance of the instrumentals and why were they not expanded upon?
Johan: theyīre there to make the album a bit more varied, to give the listener some time to breathe because the songs are pretty intense***
Macabre: Now, for your fans out there - what is your current playlist of music? Have you discovered any new talent recently in the music world?
Johan: lately Iīve been listening to Soilwork - "figure number five" - great album!,The 3rd and the Mortal - "Tears laid in earth", Propellerheadz, Twin Peaks soundtrack, tori amos - as always!, Refused - "The shape of punk to come", also some orchestral stuff like Stravinsky and Dvorak***
Johan: new talent? nope***
Macabre: *laugh* ok - Well Johan, i thank you very much for your time and of course, best of luck in all of your projects.
Johan: thank you very much for a nice interview!
Macabre: Anytime! :)
Johan: take care manc-ya!
