I was born in 1985 in a time when Van Halen's "Hot for Teacher" had already surpassed its peak with teens that were oblivious to David Lee Roth's poor taste in tight clothing. Although I was brought up to enjoy the styles of Johnny Diesel and other assorted chart topping catastrophes, I've somehow managed to evade the modern world of acid-wash jeans and David Beckham hairstyles to discover the realms of progressive rock and metal.
At the moment I'm looking for work, preferably within dank-pit pubs. At the same time, I'm trying to find myself amongst the confusion and chaos of first Semester University.
It is there that I 'think' the studies of Media and Communications will enable me to secure a job in the worlds of journalism and writing. This dream might be far off, however at this point age is on my side as. For those who are curious - I turned 18 a month ago.
My thoughts on music differ from one genre to the next, but I feel my niche is with the progressive and metal categories. In the past I have been caught headbanging to the "Jackie Brown" soundtrack, but in all honesty my idols are the guitar gods, like John Petrucci, Michael Romeo and Paul Gilbert, who I at one stage aspired to rival. These are the people who, in my mind, pioneered modern rock and metal guitar and would surely be considered 'Gandalf's' if they ever appeared in a Lord of the Rings novel. Simply put, their guitar wizardry is awe-inspiring and offers more than music, but total wonderment. My favourite bands include Dream Theater, Symphony X, Spiral Architect and Dali's Dilemma. Heard of em?
Most of all, I enjoys playing squash with my friends, going to the gym, cracking unfunny jokes and of course, singing at the top of my lungs to the collection of cds in my car. In addition, my type of fun can be defined as deconstructing bad movies and revealing shocking plot-holes and hysterical acting.
Amongst my favourite titles for a good laugh ONLY are 'Lethal Ninja', 'Blade II' and all of Schwarzenegger's "stolen identity" movies.
As the only Australian member of 'Revelationz' I feel a short explanation of my introduction into metal music is in order.
Basically, until two years ago all I listen to was Pearl Jam and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. When I met an exchange student from Colombia, he introduced me to Metallica and gave me a list of songs to download. Growing up in an environment where this music is not what gets girls, it became very hard for me to adapt. In the end, it boiled down to what was good and what wasn't.
After bonding with metal music for a few months, I soon discovered that mainstream music was for a different type of person - unlike me. So ever since the day I started listening to Metallica, I have been building up a mental library of music and songs that I love. Interestingly, there are not any mainstream songs that belong to this library.
I feel that music is something that should be enjoyed and even worshipped to an extent.
All music is good music, but not when it's made for the purposes of marketing or promoting someone's image. As long as there is a message, I think that it is worth listening to.
My only motto when it comes to music is "If it gives you goose bumps, it's good."

Comment by Law (Anonymous) - Friday, March 21, 2003 | Hey Yoni, I'm an Aussie too, from Adelaide. Where are you from?
And to quote a friend of mine, in relation to me commenting on how good Dream Theater's album Awake was, and being upset that its generally hidden from the average radio listener..."this would be mainstream, if mainstream was good enough!"

Comment by Yoni (Anonymous) - Friday, March 21, 2003 | Hey Law,

Awake is a top album, probably my favourite one, or maybe I&W.. they're all unreal.

Comment by Anders (staff) (Anonymous) - Monday, April 7, 2003 | Hi Yoni
I know this is a bit late, but welcome to the zine :)
I am quite impressed with your reviews - they have some very interesting and subtle perspectives on metal music.
It is also cool to have another Opeth and Children of Bodom fan writing for Revelationz. I don't know if you know Opeth's other albums? My favorites are Blackwater Park and Deliverance - if you don't know them you should check them out.

Comment by Yoni (Anonymous) - Tuesday, April 8, 2003 | Hey Anders,
I love blackwater park and i'm going to buy deliverence this weekend.
I wonder, do you like Blackwater Park on rainy days? I think that's when it sounds the best.. haha
Another wonderful Opeth album is 'My arms, your hearse'. I found it much heavier than the others and darker - but after a few listens it has grown on me.
Anyway - thanks for the warm, belated welcome :)

hope to see a lot of great metallic stuff from you my friend. |
Comment by Anders (Anonymous) - Monday, April 14, 2003 | Blackwater Park on rainy days? No, I haven't tried that yet - not that I can remember anyway. I am sure you're right though - the music is so atmospheric and melancholic at the same time. Next time I see some black clouds, I'll rush home play it :-) |

Comment by HaVeN (Anonymous) - Friday, June 20, 2003 | hi, I'm from spain, I've read your reviews about spiral architect and still life and I feel so interested to talk with you about some bands like cynic, aghora, gordian knot... that will probably interest you. I feel so impressed about your comprehension of still life, it's so difficult to find people who are into metal with this ability.
if you're interested, my mail is:
