Events and Reports - Dio - Live At Lille Vega, Copenhagen - July 2th, 2003
After some liquid warming up during the afternoon (we seriously have to stop that Smirnoff Ice trip we have going on Steen), we arrived at Vega about an hour before Dio went on stage. I had pretty high expectations before the show, given the fact that, it of course was Dio who was playing, but also because Dio was the main band and therefore had time to play a good deal of songs.
I was a bit surprised to find out Dio playing in this small joint with an around 500 people capacity, but the place was surely packed to the limit, and the air was hot with both warmth and excitement.
Killing The Dragon functioned pretty well as the opening track, a nice grooving song that fired up the crow, a right in your face opener.
I was very pleased when Straight Through The Heart was introduced, a fantastic song that glows with power, and live it simply ruled. The hard drums, pounding bass and heavy guitar put down a solid fundament in this song and through the rest of the concert. The hymn Stand Up And Shout was also highly appreciated and a lot of energy was created on stage during this one.
One of many highlight's of the show was the extensive drum solo from Simon Wright, power-packed and highly interesting with its orchestral arrangements that was mixed into the performance.
The Mob Rules was the first Black Sabbath song, although it rocked pretty well, it isn't really my favourite song from that album; it came out a bit simple I think. Heaven And Hell on the other hand was majestic. A cool experimenting version of the classic song, featuring some glorious vocals and just the right capturing atmosphere.
Rock N' Roll was the second and last track from the recent Killing The Dragon release and it really worked great on stage. The powerful bass from Jimmy Bain was easily heard (and felt) and the fantastic groove of the songs main rhythm hit the audience with great force.
I Speed At Night was one of the minor surprises in the setlist and it was cool to hear this old song in an energized and fast version.
The Magica album is in my book considered one of Dio's best and Lord Of The Last Day was also one of the night's biggest treats. The ultra slow but very heavy guitar rhythm sounded fantastic, Craig Goldy played some great tight guitar on this one, and delivered an overall solid performance during the night.
Dream Evil was also a cool song to hear live, an old classic Dio track featuring some nice singing from the fans in the melodic chorus.
Songs from The Last In Line album were featured a lot, Evil Eyes rocked nicely, but came out a bit standard compared to many other songs, The Last In Line was pure magic though, with it's very melodic vibe, and a powerful and fast version of We Rock sent people crazy.
The set also included some cool Rainbow tracks that were performed with great skill and a positive feeling like Man On The Silver Mountain. What seemed to really get the hall over the edge was Holy Diver with its monster riff and Rainbow In The Dark featuring great melodic keyboard tunes, Dio's stunning vocals and an ultra tight rhythm section.
The sound was pretty intense and overall a nice volume level was found, even though the keys and guitar could have been turned up just a bit.
Ronnie had a great interaction with the fans and the band was highly applauded multiple times during the show, even though they played for about 1 ½ hour I was left wanting more, and that is only a good thing for sure. The band seemed to have a good time on stage and the whole concert had very positive aura.
Overall this was a very good appearance by the band that showed that the old classics as well as newer compositions rules not only on record, but have a life on their own on stage, a very compact and powerful one indeed.
