Over Us Eden - Over Us Eden
This is the debut album by Over Us Eden, a Heavy Rock/Metal band formed in 2000. The music they play is heavy and grooving Power Rock with a hard-edged, and very talented female vocalist. Magali Luyten's vocals fits the powerful music perfect. She has a raw voice filled with power and intesity, and she uses it very well here. It sounds like she has a big set of... lungs... Imagine Elisa from Dark Moor and Fairyland, with a much rawer voice, and you're getting there.

The music displays some good ideas, with many breaks and an overall complex, sometimes epic feel. Personally I miss some more melody in many songs. But what the music lacks in melody, it makes up for in terms of power, energy and intensity. This is one of those albums that challenges the listener and rises with each listen, but it still hasn't taken off for me.

My favourites include Fahrenheit Zero, which has a lot of rythm changes and cool ideas. Evil Roots starts out very promising and only gets better with an excellent heavy middle part and some fine solos by the two guitarists Uli Wollgarten and David Dell. Metamorphosis is also a pretty cool song with an epic edge to the guitar melody. Deep Cortex feels more straight forward than most of the songs, and has a nice chorus with some good guitar playing. Deliverance is a great closer to the album, where Magali sings some parts with a clean voice.

If only all the songs were as good as the ones mentioned above. Songs like Night time, Sunchild, In the eyes of Cygnus and Silent Tree never really take off, and drag the album down.

The production is very raw and while it gives the album a powerful sound, it also makes the album feel a bit monotone. I miss some dynamics in the sound, and with some of the less interesting songs, it's hard to keep the concentration. To be fair, it should be said that the album has yet to be mastered, so it will be interesting to listen to the final result.

Over Us Eden have the Energy, Power and Intensity. If they were able to mix this with better melodies and a more dynamic sound, then I would really start to take notice. So far this is a very promising debut, showing huge potential. Nothing revolutionary (yet), but definitely above average.

If you want to listen to a few songs from this album, then check out the band's web site where both audio and video is available.
