Freak Kitchen - Freak Kitchen
Surprise!!!!!!.

In 1997 I bought Freak Kitchens debut album "Appetizer" because of singer and amazing guitar player Mattias "IA" Eklundh. Mattias was the guitarist on Fate: Scratch ´N Sniff, which is the best Danish Heavy Rock record ever. The first song best described the Appetizer album, because it was called "Raw". The music was a lot rawer than the melodic heavy rock on Fate's record. I was a bit disappointed and later on sold the album in a used CD store.

At a Christmas party last year one of my friends played a tune from Freak Kitchens self titled album from 1998. The song was called "Regular Guy". A happy tune about an well-educated guy, whose ambitions were to sit in front of the TV watching football and drink beers. I decided to give Freak Kitchen a second chance and was very surprised when I purchased the mentioned self-titled album.

Mattias Eklundh is still a great and innovative guitar player. Since "Appetizer" Freak Kitchen have mainly developed and improved their songwriting skills. The album is based around the songs itself instead of long solos. The listener gets an amazing bunch of songs varying from pop-rock-heavy-jazz and sambas. Freak Kitchen seems to have created their own niche style. Mattias Eklundh' s voice also seems to fit this style of music better that the raw rock on "Appetizer".

Since this is a very diversified album it is impossible to label the album. The most outstanding tracks are "We've heard it all before" plus the melodic sing-alongs "Michael and The Syndrome" and "My new haircut". "My new Haircut" is a great song thrashing all the brit-poppers with their Beatles haircuts. This album sounds more like a band effort and even though Mattias Eklundh is the mastermind bass player Christian Gronlund has contributed with two songs.

If you take a look at the songs titles listed on your right you will notice that Freak Kitchen don't take them selves too seriously. On the crazy instrumental track "Six Dildo Bob & the Bluegrass Samba from Hell" Mattias is using a dildo to play the guitar. An album for the open minded.

Freak Kitchen is the bands third album and like "Raw" described the first album, the song "Entertain Me" describes this album well. The album is irresistible.
