Events and Reports - Sepultura - Live at Voxhall, Aarhus - April 4'th, 2003
Written by Anders

The Brazilian band Sepultura needs no introduction - they have been around since the early 80ies and they've sold a huge amount of records.

Front man and vocalist Max Cavalera left the band in 1996 because of management disagreements within the band. Max later formed his new band Soulfly. Many fans saw this as the end for Sepultura, but the band continued and auditioned for a new vocalist - here they hired Derrick Green who is still in the band today.

The concert in Aarhus was the only one in Scandinavia on Sepultura's tour, so the concert was completely sold out. The place was already packed with people when Michael, Steen and I arrived at Voxhall - we had missed the warm-up band Mevadio.

Sepultura went on stage and delivered a powerful performance. I think Derrick Green lived up to the big expectations of being vocalist in such a big band. My first thought about him was - "wow, he is big!" He was very tall and looked like a body builder. He had a tremendous appearance on stage, and I was soon to discover that his voice was equally powerful.

The band played a good selection of both old and new material - personally I prefer the old stuff, and luckily we were spoiled with classics such as Arise, Chaos AD and Territory. They also played some tracks from their coming album Roorback, including the U2 cover song Bullet The Blue Sky - a bit daring for a band in this genre I might add.

The atmosphere was intense in Voxhall, and it was obvious that a lot of die hard Sepultura fans had found their way to Aarhus.

The band played with an excellent confidence and expression reflecting the many years these guys have worked together. Tightness was at its highest, and the sound was awesome too.

This was indeed a magnificent and exhilarating concert that awoke a lot of nostalgic feelings. Sepultura proved that they still have their shit together, and that they're an excellent live band. Derrick Green passed the test (for me anyway) and the future looks bright for Brazil's number one metal band.

Look out for Sepultura's new album Roorback which will be released May 26. - also check out Michael's review of the 2-track sampler
