A solo album from a drummer?
Yes indeed,
Poison's drummer
Rikki Rockett is saluting the 70's Glam and Glitter rock on "Glitter 4 Your Soul". This tribute record has been on its way since 1999, where Rikki began the first recordings.
Overall this is an enjoyable album. Of course
Rikki Rockett is playing drums on all tracks. The other dominant person on this record is Rikki's sidekick Cliff Calabro, who helped out on
Poison's single
Rock Star from the "Hollyweird" album. Cliff Calabro has co-produced the album along with adding vocals on two tracks and playing additional guitar and bass.
Altogether the versions are well performed. The songs performed do not deviate significantly from the originals.
Rikki Rockett is using different singers to fit each individual song and he is even singing one himself.
Poison fans will get a kick out of
Bret Michaels characteristic vocals on
Tear it Down. The song is excellent and could easily been tracked for a
Poison album. The boogie rocker fits Bret's vocals perfectly.
John Corabi is sounding great as always. John Corabi is singing the
Alice Cooper classic
Elected. My personal favorite is Rikki's choice of bringing in
Jizzy Pearl to scream his lungs out on
Can You Feel It. The song is brilliantly performed with a great bar piano during the pre-chorus.
Surprisingly
Rikki Rockett is singing a T-Rex tune himself. You don't expect any award winning vocals from Rikki since he is a drummer. However, Rikki does an honorable job setting his personal mark on
Life's a Gas. This is the kind of unexpected thing you wanna hear on a solo album.
The
Poison circle is fulfilled with C.C. Deville adding some backing vocals on the great
All The Way From Memphis. The song has a great finishing solo from Blues Saraceno, whose great guitar playing is featured on the first eight tracks. His playing is very enjoyable even though his playing doesn't differ much from the originals.
When making a cover/tribute album you can always question the song selection. My only objection against this album is that I wanted Rikki to have chosen songs that were not already covered by other "80's" bands.
Def Leppard has made a great version of
Action, Rikki's version of Gary Glitter's
Do You wanna Touch is close to Joan Jetts,
Gilby Clarke has covered
Trash and the all star project Contraband made a kick ass version of
All the way from Memphis. Since this is a tribute to the forgotten era I would have chosen more forgotten songs.
You can look at this album in two ways. When thinking of this as a
Rikki Rockett solo CD you might be a little disappointed, but the right way to listen to this CD is
Rikki Rockett saluting his idols. Rikki has produced an honest tribute to the music he loves and grew up on, the 70's Glitter and Glam music. As Rikki states himself "This is my attempt to keep the music alive".
Hopefully Rikki will make another solo album with his own material. Until then "Glitter 4 Your Soul" is a worthy listen and a must for
Poison fans, who probably will enjoy this album very much.
As a music lover and
Poison fan I enjoy this album and it makes me pray that
Poison would bring their summer Tour to Europe.
