Events and Reports - Exmortem - Live at Musikcaféen, Aarhus, 12. March 2003
Written by Anders

After having interviewed Sigtyr the guitarist from Exmortem and after having reviewed Exmortem's new album Pestilence Empire, I was looking forward to see the band in action. When we arrived at Musikcaféen we were in for a surprise - apparently there was no warm up act as it had been promised. That was quite disappointing, and I never actually found out why this happened.

Musikcaféen is a very small place, and there was already a good deal of people when we arrived. Exmortem opened the show with a couple of tracks from Pestilence Empire Ghastly Grotesque and Funerary Sculpture. I was and still am very impressed that the band was able to keep the same high pace as on the albums. This was in no way at the expense of tightness - one really has to admire these guys as musicians. I was especially impressed of Michael behind the kit, he was like a machine - also Simon the vocalist made a great appearance with his brutal voice.

At first the audience seemed a bit sleepy, but as the concert progressed more and more people went out to bang their heads. At the end there were a lot of people, and there was a really good metal atmosphere in the room.

The sound was OK, but as I mentioned Musikcaféen isn't exactly known for being big. There are good and bad things about this. Intimate concerts can be really cool, because you are so close to the band; on the other hand small places aren't good for the sound.

Exmortem played both songs from the new album and from the previous Berzerker Legions. I have a preference for the new tracks, but there were some cool tracks from Berzerker Legions as well - for example Bonfire of Insanities and Berzerker Legions. Some cool tracks from Pestilence Empire were Malus Invictus and Grand Dome of Destruction.

They played 4 or 5 encores, and in one of them there was a guest performance by Exmortem's previous vocalist Søren. That was pretty cool, but I understand why Simon has taken over the job.

Overall this was a well spent Wednesday evening - it was a concert with a very high technical level and a great intensity. Exmortem is not my favorite band, but they certainly delivered a solid performance.
