Events and Reports - Manowar - Live At KB Hallen, Copenhagen - November 28th, 2002
Written by Tommy

First of all, there are no pictures in this review (sorry). In the chaos of getting in the right way, doing an interview and the fact that the promoters had not arranged a photo pass for us, kind of made it difficult, but hey what can't be seen must be read.

This was my second time seeing Manowar, and the first time on their "own" tour. As a huge Manowar fan I clearly had high expectations.

After a long wait, the lights went down, the intro began, and out of nowhere, in a great flash of light the band was on the stage playing the first part of Manowar. A great track which went straight into Brothers Of Metal Pt.1, a song that I never heard them play before this tour. A mega hymn, and with this extremely powerful version the hall just went crazy. I read that around 2.000 people had chosen to see this maniac band this Thursday evening.

The sound through the whole concert was really great, much depth and still clean and balanced, and of course damn loud.

The next track was one of the best all evening; Spirit Horse Of The Cherokee is born to be played live. The crowd sung really loud, and Eric Adams performed with brilliance.

Warriors Of The World United is one of the best songs that Manowar has ever written. A monster hymn, and on this night the version was magical. The slow mid tempo part featured both Joey DeMaio and Karl Logan on keyboards while Eric sung once again with great emotion.

Scott Columbus offered all night a very solid performance and on Kill With Power he went on with extreme power, a monster fast song. You could hear that the sound system was beginning to have problems, it sounded really bombastic.

The first solo of the evening was done by Karl who played a very fast and difficult guitar solo; I thought it was in order with a little break here, so it worked ok.

The next song is of The Dawn Of Battle single, and I Believe is a cool song with a great chorus and it worked well live.

Call To Arms was performed with a lot of intensity, and Kings Of Metal really fired up the hall. Sign Of The Hammer was another of the absolute winners of the evening, filled with power. I just love this song and it was really cool that they chose to play it.

Joey DeMaio went on with a brilliant bass solo, part electric, part acoustic. That man clearly knows great melody. He ended with a good version of the ok instrumental Sting Of The Bumblebee. But still, the instrumental part takes a lot of time away from playing some of their brilliant songs which they have a huge amount of.

The Gods Made Heavy Metal was in my opinion the least successful song of the evening. It's an ok song, but compared with March For Revenge, Mountains, Carry On or Guyana (Cult Of The Damned) it clearly stands out, but you can always find songs that you would have hoped they would have played instead.

The band sounded and seemed to be in top form, and all songs were performed with detail and much energy. Hail And Kill worked brilliant, epic beginning and then it just exploded. Eric performed some fantastic solo vocal parts, where he invited the crowd to join. It worked well and was also pretty funny.

A big plus of the evening was the three song acoustic set. Swords In The Wind in a short version with both Joey and Karl on acoustic guitars made the hall a bit quite for a moment. A brilliant song, and it was just as if the crowd stood there watching and enjoying.

Master Of The Wind in full version simply ruled, sung with brilliance, and just a magic epic feeling with tons of atmosphere.

Courage was interesting to hear in a short version, a great song, also live. The big applause for this part of the set was highly deserved.

The last four songs were some of the fastest and heaviest I have ever seen live. With four Harley's on stage Outlaw and The Power just fired away, working as non stopping ride of madness. The Power is one of my favourites, and to hear it live makes the song sound even more wild and crazy. Outlaw worked pretty well, but still I missed some of their more epic songs.

House Of Death was also pretty fast and very dark in atmosphere.

Joey DeMaio went on stage trying to speak Danish with a girl from the audience. He got most of it right and it was in fact extremely funny.

Black Wind, Fire And Steel ended the show with a song filled with power and energy, of course with a lot of drama with strings being broken and guitar played wildly.

The whole concert (almost 2 hours) was a really great experience. Great songs, great performances, great sound and stage show. All in all, Heavy Metal to the bone.

Comments from Steen
Yes, this was a great and fulfilling concert. Tommy pretty much described the whole concert very well, so I'll just add a couple of my highlights.

Brothers of Metal Pt. 1 was the first one. One of my favourites of Louder than hell and one I had hoped to hear live. Needless to say I went completely maaad during this powerful song. If I'd been in the photo pit taking pictures I probably would have become quite unpopular, so there was one good thing about that...

Spirit Horse of the Cherokee was one of the most powerful songs of the evening. This song really grows when played live. Call to arms was another nice surprise to hear live. By this time I had moved a little back in the audience where it was easier to enjoy the music.

What really made my day was the acoustic set. Swords in the wind is one of my favourite Manowar songs ever and to hear it being played this way was a magic experience. It also showed a new side of Manowar which I hope they will continue to develop. Eric's voice is as good as ever. He has so much feeling in that voice that it's amazing.

The instrumental parts were also much better than the last time I saw Manowar live and Joey speaking Danish was damn funny. I must also hail the nice girl who went on stage and flashed us all right before the last tracks. This was a huge concert experience and it confirmed my belief that Manowar will not grow old anytime soon.
