Events and Reports - Satyricon - Live at Voxhall, Aarhus - 23. October 2002
Written by Anders

The old black metal band Satyricon has been touring with another Norwegian band, Khold, to promote their new album Volcano. Being a big fan of Satyricon, I was glad to see that they had chosen to include Aarhus in their tour plan. My expectations were quite high before the concert, but the Volcano album doesn't appeal much to me, so I was hoping they would play some of the old classic songs as well. The few Khold songs I had heard had not really said me much.

We missed the Khold concert, so I can't really give them an honest review - but I spoke to some people who weren't very impressed by their performance. Apparently they had a bad sound, and their music was pretty monotonous - I guess we didn't miss anything big there.

It is without doubt that most people were there to hear Satyricon - one of the biggest black metal bands in the history. The band is known for its unconditional fight against Christianity, and the charismatic front man and vocalist, Satyr, is a much respected man in the black metal scene.

Satyr, Storm and company did a great show - they certainly haven't lost the "sparkle" - on the contrary! Apparently Satyricon had had some sound problems earlier on their tour, but the sound here was excellent. The band was very tight, but that is of course also what you could expect from an old band as Satyricon.

Satyricon played both songs from their new album and songs from their earlier albums. The highlights from the new album were Fuel For Hatred, Repined Bastard Nation and Possesed. Furthermore they played Orgasmatron (a classic Mötorhead song) and Havoc Vulture from the Rebel Extravaganza album - indeed an excellent selection. Havoc Vulture was the big "scream-along-song" and Satyr did a good job to get the crowd rocking.

These songs were all great, but people kept yelling for Mother North - this song is from the Nemesis Divina album, and it is maybe the biggest black metal "hit" ever. Fortunately Satyricon had saved the best for the last; they played Hvite Krists Død and Mother North as encores - my two favorite Satyricon songs.

Satyricon played in one and a half hour, and everyone seemed to enjoy the show. The crowd was pretty wild, and one or two people actually got thrown out. I am not really sure why this happened - maybe because of repeated stage dive attempts.

This was all in all an excellent concert, and to all who didn't catch it, I can only say you missed a killer show.
