In the 80's I read much about Greg Leon and his impressive career with Dokken, Rough Cutt and Quiet Riot. Now it is time to lend an ear to his music. Finally!
The album has a great title "Guitars, Cars and Women" and a tasty artwork that lives up to the album title. The album opener
I'm Leaving You is straight ahead 80's Heavy Rock and sets the bar for the record.
After being in a lot of bands Greg Leon decided to be his own boss and be in charge of the musical direction. Greg Leon has a good voice and is also a skilled song writer - listen to the melody in
Follow the Sun. His guitar playing on
Follow the Sun just underlines why there was such strong demand for Leon back in the day.
The album highlights are
Nothing to Lose and
Born to Die. Both have a vintage
Motley Crue sound but without Vince Neil's high pitched vocals.
Born to Die changes pace and becomes an epic song like Rainbow's
Dio era.
The album looses pace towards the end with the pop oriented songs
Dreamer and
Stay with Me Tonight.
Greg Leon Invasion got lots of great press coverage on their Rocklahoma 2007 performance and hopefully this is Greg Leon's second wind. "Guitars, Cars and Women" is actually Leon's debut but it has been followed by "Unfinished Business" in 2005, and "Wishing Well" in 2007.
"Guitars, Cars and Women" is good old fashioned US Hard Rock. The album grows on you with a handful of really strong songs and a few fillers. The album might be a bit outdated but the leitmotif is Greg Leon's guitar playing, which is a true pleasure.
