'Stark' is the outstanding debut from all female rock band, Cherri Bomb.
The band name - not, claim the band, named for the Runaways' hit but for the book, 'Cherry Bomb', subtitled, 'The Ultimate Guide to becoming A Better Flirt, a Hotter Girlfriend and to Living Life Like A Rockstar'.
That should all be a breeze for these girls. They look and sound the part already.
It's tuneful hard rock with a few post grunge inflections, spiky, energetic, silkily melodic, delivered with attitude and phenomenal musicianship.
The band is : Julia, guitar and vocals; Rena, bass and vocals; Miranda, guitar and Nia, drums.
Rena particularly has a convincing, commanding vocal presence, exuding a breathless passion on
'Already Dead', and showing both sides of the emotional coin on a cover of the Foo Fighters' '
The Pretender', at times allowing an attractive vulnerability to shine through.
Julia handles vocals on the shadowy '
Mirror, Mirror', Unusually, this song shifts down a gear going into the chorus, not up. It's a dynamic that catches you unawares, yet the chorus seems effortlessly powerful and propulsive.
Driven by clanging guitars, pounding, bass heavy percussion and shouty vocals that are a perfect fit,
'Let It Go' is maybe the highlight here, though the margin is narrow across all five tracks.
Cherri Bomb have opened for The Smashing Pumpkins and
Filter and are lined up to support The Foo Fighters,
My Chemical Romance and The Strokes at various European Rock Festivals this summer.
The future looks bright for Cherri Bomb.
Listen to
'Stark' and understand why.
