Don't be scared by the silly name.
Dear Diary is a full blown melodic hard rock band. The band formed in
Chicago by guitarists Dave Schafer and Nick Panos. The guitar duo began recruiting
Chicago based musicians. The band had trouble finding a proper singer and I am sure that most agree Jeff Evans was worth the trouble since he sounds amazing on "
Dear Diary"
While
Dear Diary never managed to get a record deal they recorded a couple of demos and opened for several well-known bands including Lynch Mob, Lillian Axe, Dream Theater, Bullet Boys, and Galactic Cowboys.
Dear Diary was another band that got lost in the grunge shuffle and in the early 90s the band played their final show at the legendary Thirsty Whale in River Grove, Illinois. The Thirsty Whale club suffered the same fate as
Dear Diary, because it closed down to be demolished to make way for a gas station. Several people has tried to relive the Thirsty Whale by making "Thirsty Whale" shows around
Chicago in different venues. Eonian Records breathes new live into
Dear Diary and offers the band and rock fans a second chance.
Dear Diary is talented and certainly stands the test of time. The band sounds fresh and quite unique. The music is based around the two guitars and singer Jeff Evans adds a very special flavor to the band.
The album opener
I Wanna Know is an earhanger immediately. The chorus is catchy, Jeff Evans sounds amazing, the guitarlines are tasty, the production superb - everything comes together on this one!
Slow Down is a good example of
Dear Diary uniqueness. Singer Jeff Evans comes from another background than typical Hard Rock singers. His vocal style is unique and his powerful voice has depth and range.
Another standout track is
Tangueray Tina. Overall the sound quality is very good with an unnoticeable deviation on
Red Rose Burn. You can't hold a good song down. Once again I cannot praise singer Jeff Evans enough - he sounds amazing and
Dear Diary really knows how to write a great tune.
Red Rose Burn is another highlight
Eonian Records is an independent label that focus on releasing bands from the late 80's that never got signed.
Dear Diary is a great addition to their catalogue, because these guys sure had the songs to make it big.
Dear Diary is one of the finest releases from Eonian Records
