It's a somewhat tenuous connection, but, what connects JettBlack with the Italia 1990 World Cup Tournament?
More later.
Hard on the heels of JettBlack's accomplished second album,
'Get Your Hands Dirty', comes this cracking 5 track EP.
Clearly designed to maintain the upward trajectory of the band's profile, it makes all the right noises and throws all the right shapes.
Anyone who has heard the first or the second album will know that this band seamlessly and energetically merge classic rock with a contemporary (and indeed ironic) take on post glam and hair metal.
The EP's title track, '
Slip It On', the opening track from the full album, is an outstanding rock song in its own right, and arguably, of all the songs on the album, this is the one where classic rock and urgent, impatient contemporary rock meet most effectively.
Driven by a taut, razor sharp riff and tightly wound axework, the track spins on John Dow's electrifying vocals, delivered with the occasional Coverdale vocal mannerism.
The track that finished
'Get Your Hands Dirty', '
Chasing Love', is also here. It was a marvellously apposite closer, and now that it's jumped the queue to second place it's in a better position to show off its pulsing, piston pumping intensity, a quality heightened by Dow's cool, reined back vocal.
On the basis that the true test of any song is how well it stands up in an acoustic guise, then '
Motherf**ker' (from the album) and new song '
The Sweet And The Brave' pass with high flying colours, particularly the latter (where has this song been?).
And that question.
Rounding out the EP is a cover of
'Dangerzone', a song from the 'Top Gun' soundtrack, originally performed by Kenny Loggins (after being turned down seprarately by Bryan Adams and Toto).
The song was written by the legendary Georgio Moroder and lyricist, Tom Whitlock.
Among many other collaborations, Moroder and Whitlock also wrote 'To Be Number One', the official theme song for Italia '90. But you knew that, didn't you.
