Skin - Breaking the Silence
Remember Skin? In 1994 the English band released their brilliant debut album. The album was released in a era where Hard Rock certainly wasn't the flavor of the day. Despite the demise of Hard Rock Skin's debut spawned 3 hit singles and got great reviews. In support of the album Skin played the prestigious Monsters of Rock festival and supported Bon Jovi.

Skin released a handful of albums, which all failed to match the success of the debut album. The band was disillusioned of the falling career and broke up in 1998. An 11 year hiatus was broken when Download promoter Andy Copping invited the band to reunite at Download festival held at Donnington Park, which also hosted the legendary Monster of Rock festival where Skin played in 1994.

The band is back with 11 fresh studio tracks. At first they failed to impress me but the album is a grower. Singer Nev MacDonald deservers a special mention. His voice still sounds forceful even though his tone has changed a bit. MacDonald sounds amazing on Can You Feel it and Don't Call it Love, which both could have been featured on the debut album.

"Breaking the Silence" is 11 Hard Rock songs.  The band seems to have focused on the melodies and if you give the album time some strong melodies will unfold.

The album opens with the meaning song Good to Be Back. The album is packed with Hard Rock taken into 2010. Stronger is a great example of a contemporary rock song, which is build on traditional Rock N' Roll riffs.

Not everything comes off like a nice tan on the skin: It doesn't suit Skin to take on a modern approach and therefore Trigger inside and Indestructible don't work and come off as the only weak tracks on the album.

It is tragic comic that Skin releases a brand new album, which receives critical acclaim and regains interest in the band. At the same time Skin announces that they are breaking up once again. A bit of a waste........
