32 years after the last studio album
New York Dolls reformed in a new carnation and released the brilliant comeback album "One Day It Will Please us to Remember Even This".
Both Arthur Kane and Johnny Thunders have passed away so Sylvain Sylvain and David Johansen are the only original members and again they use the brilliant line up who recorded "One Day It Will Please to Remember This".
"Cause I Sez So" already got a lot of press because Todd Rundgren has produced it. Todd Rundgren also produced the Dolls classic debut album and therefore the album was expected to go back to the sound of the first album (read: Raw and unpolished).
Unfortunately "'Cause I Sez So" is the total opposite. The music sounds uninspired and most of the songs are boring. It is hard to believe that this band was outrageous, because they have gone soft and sounds somewhere between Leonard Cohen and Dire Straits.
The tradition of the Dolls is only resembled on
Drowning and
it is the only highlight on a weak album where only the title track and
Muddy Bones has a touch of nerve and bite. I don't know what drugs the band was on since they chose to include songs like
Temptation to Exist, Working Rain, Nobody Got No Bizness and
Better Than You. The re-recording of
Trash speak for itself!
The song writing is weak and the brilliant guitarist Steve Conte is anonymous on the record. David Johansen sounds tired and in general the album lacks Rock songs, quality and feel.
Disappointing!
