I admit that I rarely enjoy female fronted Hard Rock. However, lately I bought the entire Runaways catalogue on vinyl so the timing is perfect for
Cherry Lips to win my musical heart, since they are an all girl band.
The band consists of 4 good looking girls from Italy. With the origin in mind you normally expect heavy accent, but lead singer Stefania Parks has British origins and speaks native English.
Cherry Lips actually sound similar to Runaways - The only difference is that Runaways recorded their music 20 years ago. Back then it was kind of charming, but
Cherry Lips sounds like they recorded this album in the seventies with a thin production that isn't suitable for 2009.
Cherry Lips has good looks like Runaways, but plays it harder like Girlschool. However, they don't have the kick ass edge and drive of Crucified Barbara. This is bubblegum Hard Rock with a tiny twist of punk.
The album is clearly marked by being a debut album. The album is not bad. The Girls are okay on their instruments and sounds pretty tight, but the material is too primitive and simple. The band has existed in 4 years and there is something to build on. For now
Cherry Lips needs to concentrate on writing better material and get some more support gigs. The sloppy cover version of Cindy Lauper's
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun should never have been public outside
Cherry Lips rehearsal space.
Still a long way to go and while I am not too enthusiastic about the album they manage to surprise me on the swaggering
Back For More and
The Race is on plus the melodic
