Events and Reports - Whitesnake - Live at Train, Aarhus Denmark June 1st 2009
On a sunny Monday evening mighty Whitesnake was to play Train in Aarhus, Denmark. The other 3 times I have seen Whitesnake was at huge festivals, so I would NOT pass a rare chance of seeing them in a venue with a capacity of only 800 people.
On this tour Whitesnake headlines Download festival and several other festivals, so this low key gig was a chance to test the current setlist and hear comments from the crowd.
Best Years opened the show and after the first verse you could see a smiling Dough Aldrich screaming "Small stage" to Reb Beach.
Coverdale had a rant about that his very first gig with Deep Purple was in Aarhus. However, the equipment never got there so the show was cancelled and his debut postponed till the next evening in Copenhagen. 35 Years later Coverdale was back to deliver his show and he excused the long wait. Better late than never!
The Deeper the Love was performed acoustically only by Coverdale and Aldrich. This year is the anniversary of "Slip of the Tongue" and Coverdale advertised the reissue of the album had cool footage from Donnington. The acoustic version of The Deeper the Love worked perfect in a club setting. You actually wondered if the microphone and guitars were plugged at all.
Coverdale was in a great mood and used the intimate venue to communicate with the crowd teasing us all on the Viking heritage and how the Danes invaded England back in day with raping and killing.
Coverdale let people shout out requests and teased that for 10 Euro he world play any song. Funny to hear obscure songs like Cheap and Nasty shouted out.
As always Doug Aldrich sounded brilliant. The solo on Lay Down Stay Down was breathtaking. Aldrich's soulful playing and thick warm Les Paul sound complements Reb Beach's sound, since Beach uses lots of effects and is more of a shredder. Reb Beach played the solos on most of the 1987 stuff like Is This love, Gimme All Your Love and Here I Go Again. The 1987 stuff got the best response plus Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City.
"New" drummer Chris Frazier got to play a drum solo so Coverdale could catch his breath and Reb Beach and Dough Aldrich also got to duel.
Last year Coverdale was struggling with his voice. At this show there was no hiding since the crowd was in your face. Coverdale's voice is a bit worn out, but he sang great and gave it a 100 percent.
Seeing Whitesnake in such a small club was priceless and the concert definitely gets on my "best concerts of 2009".
Whitesnake is a great bunch of musicians, has a fantastic song catalogue and David Coverdale is one of the biggest rock stars still going strong.
In true rock star fashion the band left in 2 Limos right after playing Still of the Night skipping the planned second encore: Fool For Your Loving. However, that couldn't spoil that this was a wonderful evening!
