What is your name and your current position in the band? Blaspherion: We are UNLIGHT and I am the singer and one of the two guitars in this band. How would you categorize the style of the band? And did you ever consider or try playing other styles of music than the one(s) you are playing now? Blaspherion: We are playing a mixture of Black Metal (more the Swedish style) and Thrash Metal (more the old style of Kreator, Destruction, Slayer). Also there is some Death Metal in our music. We play and combine everything we like. I think, this is enough influence to create our sound. What is your latest album and why should people buy it? Blaspherion: Violator! Great Thrash Metal band from Brazil. Itīs worth trying it, because it will remind you of the good old metal-days! Tell us about the history of the band. More specifically, when was the band formed, how did you meet, and have there been any particular highlights or low points in your career, any crucial events that have taken you where you are today? Blaspherion: Oh, the story of forming UNLIGHT is far too long to point out every aspect. It all began in October 1997 when I decided to form my own band. First there were some musicians in UNLIGHT I found in my former bands. But until now the line up changed a lot because of very different reasons. The highlights are the steps we took forward to reach our aim. These are little steps but thatīs the only way it works. For example every time we signed a new label-contract. Was there ever a time when you wondered if your band would remain just a local outfit and never make it in the industry? Blaspherion: Hmmm. maybe when there were no offers or an important member left us. Can you share with us one or two of your favourite moments with the band? Blaspherion: So you have to come to one of our live-shows. These are the moments that are very important to us. And we want to share these moments with lots of people in the audience. How is the writing process in the band? Blaspherion: Usually I am writing the rough stuff at home and then I show it to the others. At that moment everyone in UNLIGHT is part of the process arranging and composing the songs until every member has a good feeling with it. What brought you on the path to becoming a musician? Did you ever consider or take any other paths through life besides music? Blaspherion: Sure I have other interests too. But music is the most important thing in my life. And that can also be said for all the other guys in UNLIGHT. I donīt know why, but one day I decided to learn bassguitar. The next months I found my first band. Thatīs how it all began. Do you have any idols? If yes, who? Blaspherion: No. Maybe Lemmy, because he still rocks! Do you have any regrets looking back at your career? For example any songs or even full albums that you regret recording? If so, what made you regret it? Blaspherion: No. I donīt regret anything in musical career. Everything I have done had to be done. Are there particular songs in your catalogue that the fans love but you're not particular fond of yourself? Blaspherion: Thatīs a difficult question. Sometime they are shouting the titles of songs that I donīt like to play anymore because I am sick of them. But in general, our fans are o.k. with the songs we are playing live on stage. How important do you rate the lyrical side of your albums? Blaspherion: Itīs one of the main parts I think. Itīs the message that we want to spread. What do you think about the state of the music industry today? Blaspherion: Sure we are living in difficult times - economically. But sometimes I really wonder who can afford to buy an ordinary CD for 18 Euros?! For me all the internet piracy is just a logical conclusion of those high prices customers have to pay nowadays. Itīs not easy, sure. The music-companies have also to gain money to pay their workers. But paying 18 Euros for a CD is too much for many of the young fans. And they are the basement everything is built on. What do you think is the best way to fight music piracy? Blaspherion: Lower prices. Or going back to good old vinyl stuff! Do you have a life philosophy? If yes, what is it? Blaspherion: I am going MY way! What ever it costs! Can you describe a typical day in your life? Blaspherion: Getting up, getting drunk, playing guitar, getting drunk again, playing guitar, lay a girl, still drunk, doing some rehearsal with my pals, getting drunk with my pals, fall asleep. No. that was not the whole truth. But how should I tell you, that I never talk about my private life. But maybe itīs true what I told you? What do you like to spend your time with besides music? Blaspherion: Hanging around with my guys. Having a good time with nice music or movies and lots of beer. What's the craziest thing that has ever happened on a tour? Blaspherion: Once the owner of a club in Belgium left the building while UNLIGHT was inside. He just closed the all the doors an we were caught inside while the other band were standing outside watching us through the windows laughing at us. It took the bastard a couple of hours to come back and free us. Idiot. You're heading off to live on a deserted island for a couple of years with your portable entertainment system... Which albums, movies or books would you bring? (Max. 3 of each) Blaspherion: Some science books, Dissection: "Storm Of The Lights Bane", Sepultura: Beneath The Remains", Asphyx: "The Rack", Movies: The 3 parts of Austin Powers. What is your favourite joke? Blaspherion: Donīt have a favourite one. Can you tell us about any future plans for you and your band? Blaspherion: We are trying to go on and get as far as possible. We are already composing new songs and looking forward to record them as soon as possible. Thanks for answering these questions. Now you are free to write a few lines to our readers. Blaspherion: If you are interested in UNLIGHT, please check out our homepage or our myspace-profile. You can listen to a lot of songs there. Thank you a lot for the interview!!!
