Jim Davies - Electronic Guitar
One day I got this e-mail from the fine gentleman handling promos at Mascot Records;

Today I've sent you a promo of Jim Davies "Electronic Guitar". Jim is the former live guitarist of the Prodigy, but has also recorded with them, in fact quite a few of the weird sounds on "Firestarter" and "Breathe" are actually his guitar.

This first solo record isn't a dance record or anything but at the same time it isn't a conventional guitarist solo album as well.

Hmmm!!!
Since I consider Mascot Records one of the leading labels that rarely lets me down I decided to embrace this album. To put it quite simple some is great and some isn't. Overall Jim Davies has surprised me in a positive way. His sense of melody is great and he wrote some great catchy melody lines. That being said his past in Prodigy shines through with all the electronics effects. The drums are electronic and I really miss the dynamic of a real band.

Jim Davies is not a technical shredder, but he incorporates electronic music into the world of guitar instrumentals. There are lots of effects and several sounds that you wouldn't believe was made on guitar. Most songs have good melodies but a full album of electronic-based guitar is certainly not for everybody.

I prefer to listen to 3-4 tracks in a row and then put something else on. That way the album sounds fresh but if I listen to all tracks it tends to get prolonged. Needles to say that this is not for everybody, but "Electronic Guitar" is a nice deviation from the stereotype "fast shredding over a backing track".
