What is your name and your current position in the band? D.Frans (Guitarist and main songwriter) How would you categorize the style of the band? And did you ever consider or try playing other styles of music than the one(s) you are playing now? I think we play mixture of Metalcore, groove metal, thrash metal with memorable melodic lines and choruses. Earlier i played with some bands with various styles. Icon in me is the young project and therefore never played anything different. What is your latest album and why should people buy it? We have only one album "Human museum" so far. Icon in me is a unique band being the first Russian - European project. Only this should interest the people. Also in this album all the fans of the styles of music mentioned above will find the songs with balls (as we say in Russia). It is solid material indeed and i'm proud of every fucking song. Tell us about the history of the band. More specifically, when was the band formed, how did you meet, and have there been any particular highlights or low points in your career, any crucial events that have taken you where you are today? The band history started in 2007 after i finished with my previous band Hostile breed. I was having an idea about international band for a very long time. And at the end of 2007 i started to do it. Actually the history of ICON IN ME is very short. And so far we have had nothing but highlights. To these moments i could attribute the record of the album, show with Machine head and signing the contract with record label. They were really exciting moments. I hope in the future the band history will consist of just pleasant moments like that. Was there ever a time when you wondered if your band would remain just a local outfit and never make it in the industry? Originally, when i started ICON IN ME i did all for it not to remain just a local outfit. It concerned all the aspects. No one is doing anything comparable to this in Russia. Can you share with us one or two of your favourite moments with the band? For me such a moment was recording the album with people who i admired before. It has to do with Tony, Morten, Steve Smyth and others. Until that moment all this was an unbelievable dream for me. Work with these professionals is real hi-school for us. And the result that we have achieved for now makes me believe in the band's great future. How is the writing process in the band? I write the song's skeleton at home. After that we put there some flesh on the rehearsals (with Russian part of the band). And next the demo song goes to our foreign band mates (Tony and Morten) who make the final arrangements to the songs. This is how it is. What brought you on the path to becoming a musician? Did you ever consider or take any other paths through life besides music? The primary reason like most musicians was basic instinct. I wanted to be popular with girls. He he )) But the real reason was a big love for metal music. I was a young headbanger who was addicted to Iron Maiden and Metallica. And one nice day i thought, "why not try" Sometimes i damn that day. He he Do you have any idols? If yes, who? During my musical career i have had so many idols that at this moment i can't really name one. It might be my father i think. Do you have any regrets looking back at your career? For example any songs or even full albums that you regret recording? If so, what made you regret it? I have only one regret. I had to start ICON IN ME much earlier. And probably now i would be on a higher level than this. But it's better late than never (As we also say here). Are there particular songs in your catalogue that the fans love but you're not particular fond of yourself? Our album was released only a couple of days ago. And we have no idea about our fans' favourites. How important do you rate the lyrical side of your albums? Hm. I think that will be better to ask this question to our singer. Tony is the author of all lyrics. But i'll try to suppose that lyrics part is no less important than any other side. What do you think about the state of the music industry today? The situation with music industry is very sad now. On the one hand we as a young band can use the internet resources for our promotion but on the other hand the illegal downloading of music causes low album sales which in its turn brings about the financial shortage for creating new albums. This is the main problem of music industry today. I think record labels must search new ways of music distribution. What do you think is the best way to fight music piracy? I wish i knew the answer - then i would be one of the richest men in the world. Hehe. Do you have a life philosophy? If yes, what is it? I believe in me. It's my life philosophy. Haven't you guessed it from our band name? Can you describe a typical day in your life? Wake up in the morning. Have a shower and breakfast. Go to my job. Play the guitar after work and communication with my girlfriend and friends. That's my typical day. What do you like to spend your time with besides music? I like to rest in the country. Like travelling and meeting with my friends. What's the craziest thing that has ever happened on a tour? Any tour is one big crazy trip. And sometimes it stops being funny. You're heading off to live on a deserted island for a couple of years with your portable entertainment system... Which albums, movies or books would you bring? (Max. 3 of each) Albums: Forbidden - Green Stuck mojo - Declaration of a head hunter Iron maiden - 7th son of a 7th son Movies: The Godfather Once in America Leather weapon Books: Some Russian classics (Nose by Gogol and the like) What is your favourite joke? Hm. This is very difficult question for me. I think my English are not so well that I could pass all subtleties of the Russian humour. Sorry. Can you tell us about any future plans for you and your band? I hope that our album will be popular and we get many invitations to tours and festivals all over the world. Also i started to write some new material for second album. Thanks for answering these questions. Now you are free to write a few lines to our readers. Hi folks!!! Listen to the right music. Go to the concerts. Try to reduce illegal downloading music from the net. And of course - buy our album. Thanks so much. Cheers D.Frans
