Turisas

The Finnish warriors in Turisas had returned to deliver kick-ass Metal with folk overtones. That their popularity has grown was evident by the many hungry fans assembled in front of the stage. Some had even painted their faces in similar fashion to the war paint used by the band! Battle Metal opened tonight's ball, turning the fans into a whirlwind of banging heads and fists in the air. This was going to be good! Frontman Mathias "Warlord" Nygård was clearly having the time of his life, his eyes gleaming with joy and excitement, as he performed the powerful music. A very cool frontman, that sings like he means it, and has a good interaction with the audience!

The atmospheric tune A Passage To The Unknown continued the show.
The band in general didn't move around much in the traditional jumping-headbanging way, which is to be expected, given their musical style and carrying some heavy instruments. Yet there was something uplifting and inspiring about watching these wild men and woman putting their hearts into the performance! Especially, I must call attention to violinplayer Olli Vänskä, who did a fine job, adding depth to the music. The young girl (don't know her name, sorry) playing the accordion also did a great impression, handling her instrument with such ease and enthusiasm; it was a joy to watch!

Mathias "Warlord" Nygård spoke a lot in between songs, and was quite entertaining, as when he introduced the drinking song One More by telling about how the band had just toured in the States, where the beer in his opinion tasted like piss, so he was happy to be back in Denmark and drink with all his friends! Everyone was happy to party to this excellent tune!

Turisas' cover version of the Boney M classic Rasputin is pretty amusing, and got the crowd going, while the amazing To Holmgard And Beyond with its majestic power closed the show in a great way!

Dragonforce

I've seen Dragonforce perform quite a few times before, and I must say they are usually quite entertaining!

Playing at hyper speed, while drinking beer/booze out of straws from cans glued to their mike-stands, jumping around and headbanging in unison, these guys perform with an energy level so contagious, it spreads like wildfire throughout the hall! They obviously live to play fast and party hard!

Right from the moment the band entered the stage, it was evident that the energy was there, the guys joggled their instruments, played the guitars in any possible position, banged their heads and jumped like maniacs!

Fury Of The Storm was the first song, I could recognize, having not listened to the two latest Dragonforce releases, and it was a joy to hear that one!

About midway in the show, the girl that plays the accordion in Turisas came onstage with the band for an entertaining dueling solo, where keyboarder Vladimir Pruzhanov gave it all he got, and the two musicians played around a bit. Totally cool!

Two of my favorite Dragonforce songs came to live in a burst of energy, the straight-ahead rocker Revelations, and the almost epic Soldiers Of The Wasteland.

When the band performed some of the material off their newest album, The Ultra Beatdown, I noticed it sounded a tiny bit different, even a bit slower than the rest of their material. Interesting if the band will continue to develop in that direction.

The titletrack of Dragonforce's debut album, Valley Of The Damned is a great sing a long tune, almost a mini-classic for the band, and sounded good, though singer Z.P. Theart's voice started to sound seriously worn out at this point; he sounded like he really had to stretch his voice to reach the high notes. Despite that, I gladly jumped a little around to this excellent song!

After the band got the audience fired up with the usual scream contest where the audience is divided in two and then compete about, which half of the hall can deliver the loudest roar, Dragonforce ended the show with Through The Fire And Flames, the song that was featured in the Playstation game Guitar Hero 3.

The gig was like being hit by a thunderstorm; energizing and uplifting. But while playing fast and having a party attitude may make you a fun and cool guy, it doesn't make you a good musician. Dragonforce repeat the same ideas over and over, and that goes for the songs themselves and the endless guitarsolos, as well as the tone of the guitar. The music is as varied as listening to one song, and then hitting the repeat button a million times! A desperate need for variation is obviously there. In addition, singer Z.P. Theart is just not able to cut it in the vocal department! His highpitch is stretched, and he sang out of tune on several occasions. Dragonforce are entertaining as hell, but musically leaves a bit to wish for!

If you haven't seen Dragonforce live yet and get the chance, by all means grab it! They are an entertaining bunch and capable of delivering a fun and energetic show! But after witnessing a few shows, the appeal is starting to wear thin. Next time, I wish for just one surprising element, but then again, I am not holding my breath on that.
