After suddenly bailing out of
The Darkness main man Justin Hawkins in back on the scene. This time he has assembled a new band titled
Hot Leg and with song titles like
Chicken,
I've Met Jesus and
Gay in the 80's you know that he has kept the humor that permeated the music of
The Darkness.
It is impossible not to use
The Darkness as reference since Hawkins' characteristic falsetto voice is in front and he also is main songwriter. The material for
Hot Leg's debut album isn't as strong as on "One Way Ticket To
Hell .and Back" or "Permission to Land" but
Hot Leg is precisely the album fans expect.
The rock opera opener
Chicken and
Gay in the 80's are overdone. I will not sing along to the silly chorus for the last mentioned, which goes:
Oh in the 80's, They were the gayties. However, there are some great things through the disc's running time of 36 times only. The
AC/DC rocker
You Can't Hurt Me Anymore, Kissing in the Wind and the irresistible
Cocktails are album highlights. Hawkins splits lead guitar duties with Pete Rinaldi and especially the guitar solos are sharpened up and contain more elements - exemplified on
I've Me Jesus.
If you weren't into
The Darkness then don't bother checking out
Hot Leg since they are using the same ingredients as
The Darkness. It is a good album, but one tends to frighten that Hawkins is running out of ideas.
