Events and Reports - Edguy - Edguy, H.e.a.t. and All Ends - live at Kulturbolaget, Malmö, Sweden - February 5th 2009.
H.e.a.t.
The Swedish newcomers started a little earlier, than scheduled. I'm a little tired of venues that let the bands start before the announced time, for instance, we had been travelling all the way from Denmark to see this show, and missed half a song, if we had show up at the announced time, we would have missed more than half of the short show. The gig itself was quite excellent. I'm not an expert on H.e.a.t., and only knew one song in advance, but I must say, even without being a fan, I enjoyed the gig in a major way. The band put on an enthusiastic show, and their melodic, sing-a-long-friendly Hard Rock is easy to get into. Singer Kenny Leckremo has an impressive set of pipes, and his voice sounds almost better live, than on record. A very impressive performance!
All Ends
It's hard for me to judge All Ends' show fairly. First of all, the time they spend on stage provided me with a little break to go outside and get some fresh air and buy a new beer, and secondly, I didn't know anything about the band. They seemed pretty enthusiastic from what I caught of the show, the drummer was headbanging manically and the band seemed happy to perform. The music is a modern version of Metal. From what I saw, a pretty solid performance.
Edguy
After a rather long wait, the Edguys took the stage. Having looked forward to this gig tremendously, I was excited to see, if the band could fulfil my towering expectations. I'm highly into the newest album, Tinnitus Sanctus, and a huge Edguy-fan in general. The band opened with Dead Or Rock, and got the crowd going right from the start.
Some classic Edguy tunes continued the show, the crowdpleaser Tears Of A Mandrake and one of my personal favourites, Until We Rise Again. Always a pleasure to hear these two live. The band continued with an excellent deliverance of the epic The Pharao, during which Tobias "Eggi" Exxel treated us to a cool bass solo.
It is obvious why Tobias Sammet has earned a reputation as a fantastic frontman; he simply ruled the show, jumping up and down in euphoric joy, and it was very clear that he and the other Edguys enjoyed playing for us tonight. I though his vocal performance was great, which he obviously disagrees with, having issued a statement at the official Edguy homepage: "When we played Malmö yesterday and I sounded like a hoarse frog, and the fans sang along, I was reminded of how great our fans are." Well, I beg to differ; he sounded great and hit the notes perfectly. Maybe me ears are just getting old, or suffering from a bad case of tinnitus sanctus?
In general the songs from the new album came across very convincing live. With a more stripped down, less bombastic nature, tracks like Ministry Of Saints or the fantastic Pride Of Creation seem like being written to be played live, especially the latter made a huge impact.
After Ministry Of Saints, Felix Böhnke showed us his talents in a lengthy drum solo. It wasn't without a few minor mistakes, but overall pretty entertaining for a solo this long.
I often find that ballads take the energy out of a live situation, and unfortunately, we had to be exposed to the mandatory one and the band had chosen Save Me, in my opinion their weakest ballad. During this song, some of the guys from H.e.a.t. came on stage in their underwear and laid under some blankets (as a last day of the tour gag) to create a funny twist on the "romantic atmosphere". Pretty entertaining and it always makes a sappy ballad a little easier to put up with, if it makes hot guys take off their clothes, hehe!
Save Me and one of my least favourite Edguy-songs, Superheroes, were the low points for me personally, but on the other hand provided a much needed breather from all the intense headbanging and jumping up and down hysterically.
During the show, Tobias Sammet made many small references to other bands in the Metal scene, such as incorporating the chorus of HammerFall's Let The Hammer Fall into The Headless Game, or starting Vain Glory Opera with the keyboard intro to The Final Countdown, hinting at the similarities of these songs. In usual light-hearted and humorous manner, he played his way though the show, a refreshing return to form, after his slightly arrogant and self-indulgent monologue during the Avantasia show at Wacken Open Air last year.
The respond from the audience wasn't all that great, I found people to be a little dead towards the end of the show, and people in the front row even left before the final encores. Which wasn't all bad, since I got a nice spot at the fence, just in time for Lavatory Love Machine and King Of Fools, where I screamed my lungs out for the last time!
In conclusion, the show was everything an Edguy fan could wish for, a great setlist, covering most of the band's career, and a stellar performance!
