Nightlight... Dark/light, night/day, pop/metal... Reading the first words of the press release I thought "Could this
be anymore Nightwishy?" However
Nightlight is more Goth-rock than metal and keeping with the Finnish connection much more inspired by HIM than the female fronted Nightwish. Martin Steene, known from
Iron Fire and
Force of Evil has conceived the band, written the music and handles vocals as well.
Judging by this album the project is more or less doomed from the start. The band lacks something to stand out. There is no sense of personality and the music seems tailored for a not too demanding audience. It's easy to get into but lacking in depth when you get past the first four listens.
Rock, pop, metal, doom and goth influences are mixed together is a much too haphazard way and the album fails to leave a coherent impression. There are several catchy songs but it's not enough to make them memorable. It doesn't help that the lyrics fail to impress either with
Gothic Girl and
Loving the dead being low points in that area.
Martin Steene's vocals are ok but lack the punch to really stand out and his falsetto leaves a lot to be desired. The album is well played but standout moments are far between. It all feels too nice.
Props go out to the title track, which manages to stand out by capturing a heavy, doomy atmosphere. Guys, loose the polite angle, this is the way to go.
Funeral of Love is a distinctly average release that may speak to a certain teen audience who enjoy their music in the Twilight hour.
